Business English Writing Jason Downs Week 4, September 25, 2015

Share your Writing Assignment #1 with your partner  Read over your partner’s writing.  Make any edits or suggestions as needed and provide feedback on their writing.

Bibliography / Works Cited  If you use parenthetical references, you must include a bibliography at the end of the document, where you include the full information of the sources you cited.  FORMAT: Authors’ names. “Article Title in Quotes”/Book Title in Italics. (Place of Publication: Publisher, publication date or date you visited the website) page # or internet address.  EXAMPLE: Downs, Jason. Becoming a Better English Student. (Nanjing: Nanjing Agricultural University Press, 2013) pg. 43.

Notes:  There is not one universal format to use; there are in fact many different systems in use, such as MLA, Chicago, Harvard, etc. For example, in your textbook, they put a comma (,) instead of a period (.) after the author’s name. This is fine, you can use whatever system you want as long as you use it consistently throughout your writing.  The website https://www.library.cornell.edu/research/citation/mla has a nice summary of MLA style, which is probably the most common method in the U.S., although it is slightly different from what we learned in class. https://www.library.cornell.edu/research/citation/mla  You can also go to that website to see how to cite electronic sources, such as websites.

Share your responses with your partner  Read over your partner’s response to the homework reading assignment.  Make any edits or suggestions as needed and provide feedback on their writing.

Knowing Your Audience  Who do you think was the intended audience of this review of the “Blue Apron” delivery service?  What different kinds of reading audiences can you think of?

Tailoring Your Writing to a Particular Audience  Now, let’s practice: Write a paragraph reviewing some sort of product that you use frequently (it can be a positive or negative review, or mixed). Your target audience is university students in Nanjing. Now write another paragraph describing the same product, but now your target audience is different: migrant workers from the countryside who have recently moved to Nanjing.

Writing Assignment #2  Write a product review for some product you are familiar with (positive, negative, or mixed). At the top of your paper, write who your target audience is in parentheses ()  Approximately one page in 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing  You don’t need to cite outside sources, but if you do, please do it properly.

Homework  Complete Writing Assignment #2 (Week 4)  Read & study textbook ch. 5-6 (pg. 51- 67)  Read text on class website for Week 6 – “Burn the Fat” - and write your response to the text  (NOTE: NO CLASS NEXT WEEK!)
