How well do you really know the European Research and Education Networks? Background, highlights of Compendium What will the future bring? A Giga-gap? Mirror, mirror on the wall… Help wanted! http://www.terena.nl/compendium Structure of Talk:

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Idea first discussed at TERENA GA meeting in Istanbul, October 1999 Question: is it possible to collect relevant data through a Questionnaire? Trial questionnaire received replies from 15 out of 35 TERENA Members. http://www.terena.nl/compendium Background

TERENA Compendium: responses to the trial questionnaire, 2000 http://www.terena.nl/compendium

TERENA Compendium: Trial Edition, 2000 http://www.terena.nl/compendium Limited value of Trial Edition: Bad layout Not on web No analysis

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe New questionnaire: Review panel: Geoff McMullen (UKERNA) Mike Norris (HEAnet) http://www.terena.nl/compendium Questionnaire distributed in early 2001

TERENA Compendium: responses to the 2001 questionnaire http://www.terena.nl/compendium

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Analytical part on web and printed (limited edition) Why limited? Not sure all the data are correct Graphs etc. contain some errors Want to get feedback from members first http://www.terena.nl/compendium 2001 Edition: Replies from NRENs on the web

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe 1.BASIC INFORMATION 2.NETWORK INFORMATION 3.TASKS, STAFFING AND FUNDING 4.RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS http://www.terena.nl/compendium Table of Contents: A few highlights:

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Is this an appropriate measure? Has it been interpreted the same way by all NRENs? http://www.terena.nl/compendium Graph 2D: Absolute network size: Mbps x km:

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium Graph 2D: Absolute network size: Mbps x km:

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe NRENs cater not (primarily) to students Still: seems good as rough measure http://www.terena.nl/compendium Graph 2F: Relative size: Traffic per student per year in Terabytes Student number data taken from UNESCO Traffic data taken from NRENs, double- checked; many NRENs find it difficult to estimate this figure Alternative proposals welcome!

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium Graph 2F: Relative size: Traffic per student per year in Terabytes

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Note that NRENs have different tasks! Can this explain the differences? Other explanations? Is this useful/relevant for policy makers? http://www.terena.nl/compendium Graph 3F: Relative financial size: NREN budget per capita, 2001

Lower layers (IPv6, MPLS, VPNs etc.) QoS (incl. DiffServ) Videoconferencing and streaming Content delivery, indexing and searching Middleware [Mobility] TAC consensus at Lisbon, 22 May 2000 TERENA Special Interest Areas Should all these Interest Areas be treated the same way? The Compendium suggests two types of Task Force work:

TERENA Special Interest Areas Development: ‘Essential future’ or ‘Potential future’ for many, ‘Current’ for a few, including advanced NRENs ‘Best practices’: ‘Current’ for many, ‘Essential future’ for many, including advancing NRENs

TERENA Special Interest Areas Lower layers (IPv6, MPLS, VPNs etc.) Compendium replies, e.g. on IPv6 Development: Ipv6 Development FI, FR, DE, HU, IR, LU, NL, PL, PT, SI, ES, GB FR, DE, LV, PL, SE AL, CZ, DK,EE, IE, SK, CH, TR HR, IL, MK, PT BE Current Essential future Potential future develop- ment Will follow other NRENs No inter est  Suggested focus: development

TERENA Special Interest Areas Videoconferencing and streaming Compendium replies: Video Conferencing BE, HR, CZ, DK, FI, FR, DE, HU, IE, NL, PL, PT, SI, ES, SE, CH, TR, GB AL, DE, IL, LV, LT, PL, PT, SE EE, IR, LT, MK, SK Current Essential future Potential future develop- ment Will follow other NRENs No inter est  Suggested focus: ‘Best Practices’

TERENA Special Interest Areas Potential new Special Interest Areas Compendium replies, e.g. User authentication User authentication CZ, FI, FR, HU, LU, NL, PL, PT, SI, ES, SE, CH FR, DE, IR, IL, LV, LT, MK, PL, PT, SE HR, DK, FR, IE, GB AL, EE BE, TR Current Essential future Potential future develop- ment Will follow other NRENs No inter est  Suggested focus: combination?

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium WHAT WILL THE FUTURE BRING? Can the future be predicted? What do NRENs predict? When will we enter the 100 Gb era? Will the differences between NRENs increase or decrease?

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium How predictable is the evolution of research networking?

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium How predictable is the evolution of research networking? Some countries too optimistic: now predict lower level for 2003 than their earlier prediction for 2002 Some countries too pessimistic: have reached in 2001 what they predicted for 2002 (e.g. the NORDUnet countries NRENs seem confident that technology can deliver We know that progress is in leaps, not linear. Bearing in mind these caveats, NRENS see the following trend:

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium Predicted evolution of Core Network Capacity, 2001 – 2006 (in Mbps)

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium When will we enter the 100 Gb era? (log scale in Mbps)

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium How wide is the gap? Is it widening? (1) Gap in terms of access capacity to the US: now: 40 : 1 ; prediction 2003: 29 : 1 Gap in terms of access capacity to Europe: now: 10 : 1 ; prediction 2003: 16 : 1 Possible explanation: because of the GÉANT project, capacity to Europe is increasing faster than capacity to the US.

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium How wide is the gap? Is it widening? (2) Gap in terms of Core Network capacity: now: 250 : 1 ; prediction 2003: 80 : 1 Gap in terms of large-site access capacity: now: 77.5 : 1 ; prediction 2003: 312.5 : 1 Possible conclusion: development in large-site access capacity is lagging behind development in core capacity.

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium How wide is the gap? Is it widening? (3) Prediction 2003 AlbaniaGeorgiaFYRoMac. Europe cap. None if project not renewed 2 Mbps2 – 4 Mbps Core cap.As above1738 Kb2 Mbps Large site cap. As aboveN/a8 Mbps

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Mirror, mirror on the wall… Who’s the prettiest of them all? http://www.terena.nl/compendium

Europe’s prettiest NREN? http://www.terena.nl/compendium The Czech Republic? The Netherlands? Finland? or …

Europe’s prettiest NREN http://www.terena.nl/compendium … Italy?

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Of course, such a beauty contest is fun, but what is the point? What may be possible is some sort of http://www.terena.nl/compendium Benchmarking Suggestions/ideas are welcome! (Potential reward: a place on the Review Panel) For example…

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/tnc2002 Ireland ! (HEAnet)

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium HEAnet (1) From the point of view of budget per capita, Ireland seems to be doing reasonably well. However, …

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium HEAnet (2) … Ireland has a relatively large student population, and seems to be under- funded from the budget per student point of view.

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe http://www.terena.nl/compendium HEAnet (3) This is born out by the Traffic per Student statistic, which shows that there is scope for growth.

TERENA Compendium of National Research and Educational Networks in Europe Send us your criticisms! Volunteer for the new Review Panel! Let us know what you really want to know. http://www.terena.nl/compendium HELP WANTED! (note: more questions leads to fewer answers!) Funding ideas?
