JARROD O’RAFFERTY TAIMUR KHAWARI (TIM) Fire evacuation procedure

Procedure 1. Remain calm and don’t panic. 2. Listen to what your teacher says and follow their instructions. 3. Gather together in a group with the other students. 4. Exit out the door with your group and head to the emergency gathering point outside the building. 5. Wait patiently while your teacher does a head count to see if anyone is there. 6. If you are unsure where to go evacuation plans are located on every floor of the building. (See below)

If you see a fire. Don’t panic. Immediately activate the fire alarm if it is not activated yet. If the fire is small enough e.g. The size of a small trash can, try to put it out with a nearby fire extinguisher. If it gets out of control and you can not put it out just leave it and run.

Smoke When there is a lot of smoke get down on and your hands and knees to limit the risk of inhaling any toxic smoke. If you have a handkerchief use it to cover your mouth since this will also aid in the prevention of inhaling toxic fumes.

No way out If you ever get trapped in a room due to a fire. Close the door immediately and seal up any cracks with a cloth to prevent any smoke from getting in. If smoke does get in the room open up all the windows to let the smoke out. From the window try to signal for help.

What not to do in a fire Do not use any elevators since they will fill up with smoke or get overheated. Do not try to put the fire out once it has escalated. Do not gather your valuables leave them behind. Do not hide in any rooms unnecessarily, get out of the building as fast as you can.

What to look out for If you see any open doors where the fire is coming from close them as this will reduce the air flow to the room and slow down the fire. When using stairs still keep low since the smoke will up the building staircase. When coming to a closed door look to see if there is any smoke coming from behind the door or if the handle is hot as this will indicate whether or not there is a fire behind the door.

If you ever get caught on fire. Stop, drop and roll. Immediately lie on the ground and roll from side to side. If you see someone else that gets caught on fire find a blanket or a fire extinguisher and use it to put out the person. If you are burnt in some way try to find some cold water and pour it over the burn and seek medical attention immediately.

Preparing The only way to truly prepare for a fire is to take part in practice fire drills. Usually schools and sometimes even businesses do this from time to time. So when ever a fire occurs you will now be prepared and will know what to do.
