The Fishing Industry By: Luke, Harlen & Cameron

Grand Banks’ Ocean Currents The two currents that meet in Grand Banks are; The Labrador Current & The Gulf Stream The Labrador current is from the Arctic Ocean and flows along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador The Gulf Stream is from the tip of Florida and flows up along America The ocean currents meeting causes the weather to be warm in the summer and cold in the winter The climate is mostly foggy and windy

Continental Shelf The continental shelf is an undersea extension of a continent The outstanding fishing grounds on the East Coast are due to the rapid growing of plankton attracting fish The continental shelf is important to the petroleum industry because they can’t drill in deep water, so they drill where it’s shallow (Continental shelf)

Are fish renewable? Fish are a renewable resource because they can breed Fish could become a non- renewable resource if people like us keep on catching the babies then there will be no future generation of the fish and old ones will eventually die

Economic and Social Importance Fishing is economically important because people all around the world want to eat fish because they are such a great protein source which brings lots of money into our country The social importance of fishing is that it brings people together and without it some places wouldn’t exist

Fish Exports Fish exports are important to Canada’s balance of payments because we have a large percentage of fish sharing across the world and we have a good profit Canada mainly export fish to countries that can’t provide their own fish (such as any inland country) or can’t get a specific breed

Cod Fishery Collapsing The reasons behind the cod fisheries collapsing are that “factory trawlers” came from countries miles away and stole the fish from the area Also by 1975 the declining northern cod population was insufficient to yield There were also these things called draggers created. What they do are haul enormous, bag like nets held open by a combination of giant steel plates and they could pick up whole schools of fish which you could imagine would easily decrease the fish population Lessons to be learned could be that the government could follow their stocks more closely and if something is the matter they could take action

Sustained Yeild Sustained yield fishing is a conservation technique and it is the only technique that shows fish can be harvested forever This works if the number of fish caught each year does not exceed the number of fish reaching maturity that year

Collapse Of West Coast Fishery Factors that contributed to the collapse of the west coast fishery are:  Over fishing  Changes in the environment  Lack of a salmon fishing treaty Challenges facing the west coast fishery  First nations  Sport fishing  Commerical fishing

Sport Fishing Sport Fishing is when you are fishing for a certain type of fish, but not for eating. The person with the biggest fish wins prize money and the fish they caught stuffed Sport fishing is not important at all to our economy because it isn’t being used in an economic way, the fish you caught will just be hung on your wall Cameron 
