Individuality You will need a pencil or pen and a piece of paper for this part of the lesson. I want you to each write five things that make you an individual and five things that make you part of a group. These could vary from your hair color, race, hobbies, sports teams, clubs, groups, etc. Now take a closer look at the things your wrote down that make you an individual. We all have things about us that are unique. These things make us an individual. Reflect on why it is important to be an individual. Click on each of the Greasers and see what makes them different than the rest of the group. This will help you understand the idea of individuality, especially in the novel, The Outsiders.

Group Identity In The Outsiders we see group identity in both the Greasers and the Socs. While we have only read the first two chapters of the book, you should have a good understanding of what separates the two. Your group identity is based on your interest, the things you do that connects you with others. Many of you are either part of an athletic team or a musical group. This is part of your group identity. We focus on this because it helps us to understand a group of people when we understand why they are together. When looking at the Greasers, we can see what keeps them together based on their socioeconomic status, their location, and their hobbies. We must look at the individual before we look at the group. Group identity is also important because it helps us connect to connect to the group as a whole rather than just the individuals.

Cliques & Gangs I want you to think about all of the cliques that you see when walking through the hallway during passing periods. Do you see people hanging out that are similar? Do you see people alone? Do you see people hanging out with people that look the same or people that look different? Think of the first few chapters you have read in the novel. You have gotten to know a little bit about the Greaser’s as well as the Soc’s. These are the known rival gangs of the novel. Below, you see a picture of a clique from the movie, Mean Girls. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U10XZ8FwY3U In this movie, there is a group of girls who are the leaders of the school. They take this “power” to the extreme by forcing the members of their group to follow rules in order to stay in the group. In the book, the Greaser’s are the center gang we see. We experience the book through the viewpoint of Ponyboy Curtis, a member of the gang. I wanted you to think about what makes you an individual as well as what makes you fit in with other people. Of course, we do not want to take our friend groups to the extremes of the movie Mean Girls or even some cases in the book, but we technically all belong to a group that could be classified under these same categories.

Ponyboy Curtis What makes Ponyboy an individual? He likes school He is the youngest Greaser He is known for his hair He doesn’t have parents He does exceptionally well in school What makes Sodapop an individual? He is a high school drop-out ALL the ladies love him He is extremely attractive He loves horses He works on cars Sodapop Curtis

Dallas WinstonJohnny Cade What makes Dallas an individual? He hates school He is the roughest Greaser He used to live in New York He speaks his mind He isn’t afraid of anyone or anything What makes Johnny an individual? He is the quietest of the group His parents are abusive He is terrified of the Socs He was beat up by the Socs He is like the little brother of the group
