2 Components Army Air Force Marines Navy Coast Guard Note: Each branch has both an Active and Reserve force. Additionally, the Army and Air Force also have National Guard troops. National Guard units have the additional responsibility for responding to natural disasters and providing homeland security, as needed.

3 Who Serves? Approximately 2,267,000 Americans between the ages of 17 and 59. Or, less than 1 percent of the total U.S. population!

10 The Creed of a United States Marine This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. 19 Enlisting in the Military Must be 18—or 17 with parental consent. Must be a high school graduate; sometimes a GED is acceptable. Must complete basic training for chosen branch. After completing basic training, must attend a technical school to learn military occupational skills.

Generally selected from the enlisted ranks. Must complete both Basic Combat Training and Warrant Officer Candidate School. Highly respected member of the military. Air Force does not have warrant officers.

31 Combat or Combat Arms Units that most commonly engage in direct combat with the enemy, such as infantry, artillery, and armor.

32 Combat Support (CS) Units that provide fire support and direct operational assistance to combat elements. Examples include chemical, engineer, military intelligence, military police, signal, and aviation.
