ITQ Institute Strengthening Instructional Leadership in Mathematics June 5, 2014 Focus 4; Communicating with Constituents; June 2014

Pull up the BEST Rubric. Each table is assigned one section of the BEST Rubric to examine in relation to the AZCCRS shifts. Prepare a summary of your discussion on chart paper to explain to the rest of the group. Make it as visual as possible. Be prepared to share after lunch. 2 Working Lunch

Let’s Share 3 Presentations

 At your tables, talk about what communication you have had with staff, parents and/or other community members about the AZCCR standards for mathematics.  What types of concerns have you heard? 4 Time to Switch Gears!

 Identify key audiences.  Develop a set of primary messages for widespread use, as well as secondary messages with more detailed information geared to particular audiences.  Connect with stakeholders through real-life examples of the AZCCRS in action and the students who benefit from the standards. 5 Communicating the AZCCRS Messages

 Include messages that prepare stakeholders for an apparent drop in test scores, and begin communicating those messages long before assessment results are released.  Identify other likely stakeholder concerns and misinformation, and prepare messages in response.  In all messaging, link AZCCR Standards and assessments to other broad reforms underway in the district that will benefit children. 6

 Message 1  Define the issue  Message 2  Outline the problem  Message 3  Explain the solution  Communicate at all times by all leaders/ members to all stakeholders! 7 Key-Three Messages

 Key-Three Messages  Currently, each state is responsible for setting its own standards. This leads to a nation with 50 different standards despite the fact that the expectations of colleges and employers in math and English are nearly universal and not bound by state lines. 8 Sample

 In addition, far too many students drop out or graduate from high school without the knowledge and skills required for success, closing doors and limiting their post-high school options. In our state, XX percent of students are dropping out before earning a high school diploma and XX of first-year college students are enrolled in remedial (non-credit bearing) courses. 9

 Implementing the AZCCR Standards offers an opportunity to anchor our system in college and career readiness for all students, providing a common foundation for students across the country that will prepare them for college, careers and life. 10

 With your school teams  Create  Your 3-Key Messages  Join with another school team  Compare your 3-Key Messages, and come to consensus on what should be included.  Join with another pair  Repeat the process. 11 Application

12 Communicating the AZCCRS Messengers  Make sure that your classroom teachers are well trained on the AZCCRS because the public will turn to them first for answers.  Think of parents and community members not only as consumers of communications but as communicators as well. People often ask their neighbors about what is going on, so be aggressive in ensuring the public know about what the district is doing with these new standards.

13  Equip all district staff to serve as messengers to the external community.  “Deputize” local businesses, universities, celebrity graduates, and others to speak on your behalf about the value of raising the district’s academic standards.

14 Communicating the AZCCRS Strategies  Recognize and act on the critical need for the superintendent and school board to spur internal and external support for the AZCCRS. This includes encouraging communications to staff to think and act strategically in support of the new standards.

Read “How to Talk Publicly About the Common Core”. Discuss at your tables –The points that resonate with you –The points with which you disagree 15 Communicating the AZCCRS

16  Develop a AZCCRS communications plan or campaign, engaging a broad- based coalition of community partners and supporters.  Develop a comprehensive set of printed and online AZCCRS resources.  Use print and digital resources as a means, not an end, to community outreach efforts. Recommendations

17  Proactively engage the media in communicating information and documenting progress.  Work closely with the Arizona Department of Education on communication efforts. –http://www.azed.gov/azccrs/communicationstoo lkit/http://www.azed.gov/azccrs/communicationstoo lkit/  Engage stakeholders and solicit feedback through public events and activities.

18 Application  Plan how you will address your constituency groups regarding the AZCCRS.  Parents / families  Community / businesses

Please complete the Satisfaction Survey –https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AZCCRS SatSurveyhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AZCCRS SatSurvey 19 Feedback When you are finished, you may leave. Have at great weekend!
