“Educating and Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders”

WHAT ARE EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS? Educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful, while also helping parents understand what is expected of their children.

WHAT IS THE COMMON CORE? A set of clear, college and career ready standards for Kindergarten through 12 th grade in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. The Common Core is designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to take credit bearing introductory courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce.

WHY ARE THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS ONLY FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH? English language arts and math were the subjects chosen for the Common Core State Standards because they are areas upon which students build skill sets that are used in other subjects. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so the standards specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.

DIG DEEP! 1. Short list of anchor standards that clearly state what a student needs in order to be ready for college and career. 2. Focus on critical thinking. 3. Engagement.

CONSTRUCTIVISM Theory based on observation and scientific study about how people learn. Students are encouraged to use active techniques (experiments, real-world problem solving) to create more knowledge and then to reflect on and talk about what they are doing and how their understanding is changing.

Students construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. Constructivism happens through asking questions, exploring and assessing what we know.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Confucius once said: I HEAR AND I FORGET I SEE AND I REMEMBER I DO AND I UNDERSTAND

SOPHOCLES “One must learning by doing the thing, for though you think you know it – you have no certainty, until you try.”
