2 2 Transitional Kindergarten Currently children who turn 5 on or before Dec. 2 may enroll in kindergarten The Kindergarten Readiness Act (SB 1831) amends Ed Code Sections 46300, 48000, 48010. A child shall be admitted to K at the beginning of the school year if the child will have his/her 5 th birthday on or before one of the following dates:  Nov 1 of 2012-13 school year  Oct 1 of 2013-14 school year  Sep 1 of 2014-15 school year and each year thereafter. 2

3 Transitional Kindergarten Transitional Kindergarten is year one of a two- year kindergarten program It is for students who would have been able to attend kindergarten prior to the Kindergarten Readiness Act Funded by ADA and no cost to parents Districts may have regional classes Students will return to neighborhood school for traditional kindergarten.

8 Staffing TK Program must be taught by a multiple subjects credentialed teacher Background in early childhood development preferred Trained in the Year 1 curriculum On-going professional development

9 TK Curriculum Based on State Kindergarten Standards Developmentally appropriate Focus on: – developing kindergarten readiness skills – language development and other foundation skills (fine motor skills, etc.) Year 2 curriculum will be the traditional kindergarten curriculum

10 Community Outreach Meet with State Preschool Teachers Information in School Newsletters and on District and School Webpages Office staff informing parents during enrollment Regional Informational Meetings

11 Potential Costs Instructional Materials –Language Arts Materials –Math Materials Professional Development –2 days of Curriculum-based training Transportation
