3 The Louisiana Purchase: Vocabulary pioneer – the first people to enter a region impressment – the forcing of American sailors to serve on British ships

4 The Louisiana Purchase: Opening the West Daniel Boone and John Finley made it possible for pioneers to cross the Appalachian Mts. France sells the entire Louisiana Territory to the US because they needed money to pay for the war with Great Britain. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the US.

5 The Louisiana Purchase: The Louisiana Territory President Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead the Corps of Discovery. They set out to map the course of the Missouri River and find a land route to the Pacific Ocean. Sacagawea, a Native American woman, served as a guide and interpreter.

6 The Louisiana Purchase: The Louisiana Territory Congress passes the Embargo Act of1807 to protect American ships. This law ended up hurting the American economy more than it hurt France or Great Britain. Relations with these countries also grew worse. We were headed toward the War of 1812.
