1 - Who were the Puritans? - Main features - parable of talents - Religion differences - History Serena Dri

2 - significant group of Protestants - they were hostile to official Church authorities - they censured what they termed the “superstitious” symbols of Catholicism, such as statues and sacerdotal vestments. - they had very strictly moral values. Who were the Puritans??

3 - The Puritans believed that the Bible was God's true law, and that it provided a plan for living. - The established church of the day described access to God as monastic and possible only within the confines of "church authority". - The Puritans had their own unique community and cultural practices, most of them based on their religious beliefs. 4 The Parable of Talents God give us some skills and we have to use it in our life in order to help other people and progress in society. Belief in predestination free- will (The Parable of the Talents is found in Matthew 25:14-30)

5 Free- will : man can decide what they want and what they don't want to do, but they have to accept the consequences more responsibility (main difference between Catholics and Puritans) CatholicsPuritans they ask God they act in order to to solve problemssave problems

6 Religion differences The religion differences came out during the reign of Charles I: - ANGLICANS practised the religion of the Church of England - CATHOLICS were very much distrusted and feared for their tendency to intrigue - PURITANS were a group of people composed from non- conformists and dissenters. They came the leaders of the opposition to the Crown.

7 -The Puritans were mainly from the emerging middle class. CIVIL WAR Middle classAristocracy (triumph of Puritans) - They imposed a very rigid way of life: no pleasure, no amusement and the theatre were closed. -The Bible was the source of all rules. Church and State became one and the same power. - Puritan domination finished, but it left a mark never to be extinguished in British and American society. When James I became king, to escape the persecution, Puritans left England. -They decided to go to America. On September 16, 1620, the Pilgrims left the English port of Plymouth and headed the America. The Pilgrims' ship was the Mayflower. HISTORY
