It Hurts! 5 th Grade Counseling Lesson November/December 2015

Objectives PS:A1.6 – Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior PS:A1.10 – Identify personal strengths and assets PS:B1.4 – Develop effective coping skills when dealing with problems

Learning Targets I can become more aware of how my actions can hurt others. I can identify ways I can stop the mean things going on around me (or stop the mean things I am doing to people.) I can identify things I like about myself to help me in my positive self-talk.

What Would You Think? A student in your class gets called to the principal’s office.

What Would You Think? A friend texts you something about another kid that goes to our school.

What Would You DO? A person in your class makes fun of other people in your class or switch class.

As You Watch the Video Think… If I saw this happening, what would I do in this situation? (be honest with yourself!) Why are the kids acting this way? What could I do to make a difference in this situation?

Let’s Talk When Hannah saw Emma with the principal and saw that she was crying, she immediately assumed that Emma had done something wrong. Do you think most kids would make that assumption? Do you think most kids would assume the worst? Why or why not?

Let’s Talk The boys took a picture of Jackson and texted it to their friends. Do you think cyberbullying is worse than face-to-face bullying? Why or why not?

Let’s Talk Samantha tried to bully Elaine. Do you think friends often bully friends? Do you think Samantha is really Elaine’s friend? Why or why not?

Let’s Talk Casey and Emily stood up for Elaine. Do you think most kids would do that? Why do you think some kids stand by and let someone bully another person? What if everyone decided that they wouldn’t stand by and do nothing when they see bullying happening?

Try This! Self talk is a quiet conversation between you and your inner voice It helps you focus on the positive things about yourself and can make you feel more confident. Positive Self-Talk Don’t listen to that! Just keep walking. They don’t know me! Nothing they are saying is true! I am good at…

Let’s Write! 1.Put your name & teacher at the top of your index card. 2.Write at least three things you like about yourself. 3.Complete the sentence: “What I wish people knew about me is…” 4.If you finish early, turn your card over and draw me a pretty picture!

Learning Targets Are you more aware of how your actions can hurt others? Can you list 2 ways you can stop the mean things going on around your(or stop the mean things you are doing to people)? Did you identify things you like about yourself to help you in your positive self-talk?
