An art movement that was popular from the end of WWII (mid 1940’s) to the early 1960’s A form of spontaneous painting Based on intuition rather than reality Finished product does not represent an obvious subject Originated in the U.S. with artists based primarily out o New York City. The first American art movement to be recognized internationally

Artists use a variety of techniques to create their abstract paintings, even combining a variety of techniques at once. Exaggerated gestures while painting (action painting). Use of colour to create mood in a painting. Use of lines and shapes to create a certain atmosphere. Use of tools to create effects such as dragging the paint across the canvas, creating lines in the wet paint, etc. Painting to music often inspired ideas and helps the creativity flow.
