3 SSWH 8 a & b Explain the rise and fall of the Olmec, Mayan, Aztec, and Inca empires. Compare the culture of the Americas; include government, economy, religion, and the arts of the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas.

4 Olmec, 900 B.C. Southern Mexico, Gulf Coast Name means=Rubber Rope Religion: center of society – worshiped the jaguar, feathered serpent Practiced Blood Letting Goods were traded both north & south

8 Aztecs, A.D. 1200 Central Mexico Poor nomadic people, based their growing power on military conquest Nobles ruled as military leaders, priests, & government officials Emperors treated as gods, absolute power Religion: temples in the center of the cities, performed ceremonies, rituals, & sacrifices POWs (Prisoners of War) were used as human sacrifices, this encouraged Aztecs to conquer others Decline: Conquered – Hernando Cortes
