1 Alfred Russel Wallace Presented by: Codie O’Neil

2 Wallace was born in Wales on January 8th 1823 and died at the age of 90 on November 7th 1913. He was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist. About him

3 Wallace was married to Annie Mitten (Wallace) She lived from 1848- 1913 Together they had three children - Violet Wallace - Hebert Wallace - William Wallace Family

4 Wallace attended a free grammar school because of his ability to pass a academic selection test. He did not attend university He studied and worked in land surveying with his older brother. Education

6 Before Wallace and Darwin developed the theory, most people believed evolution was all a gods creation. The Theory of Natural Selection changed the way scientist think, then and now. Before

8 Wallace and Darwin communicated over the years as Darwin was gathering information on his theory Wallace wanted Darwin's help in publishing his theory He sent Darwin a letter containing his ideas Relation with Charles Darwin

9 Wallace wrote a paper on the theory of natural selection which was published with some of Charles Darwin’s work in 1858. Contributions

10 The Theory of natural selection is that in any generation, some individuals are more likely to live and reproduce than others. There are factors to the theory that need to be proven true to call it evolution. That factors are: - Ability to reproduce - Different characteristics between individuals - Gain characteristics from parents (mutations & adaptations) Theory of Natural Selection

13 By the end of his life, Wallace was known is places all over. He passed away in his sleep on Nov 7th 1913 and buried Nov 10 th in a nearby cemetery On Nov 1st 1915, a medallion with his name engraved was put in Westminster Abbey next to the memorial to Darwin. His Death & Memorial
