2 Pssa Terms Tone -any sound considered with reference to its quality, pitch, strength, source Mood -a state or quality of feeling at a particular time Diction -style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words

3 Pssa Terms Part 2 Synonym -a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the language, as joyful, elated, glad. Antonym -a word opposite in meaning to another

4 Literary Terms Alliteration -is the repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words Mood -is the emotional attitude the author takes towards hir subject. Allusion -is a brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or ficticious, or to a work of art. Casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event. An allusion may be drawn from history, geography, literature, or religion.

5 Literary Terms Continued Irony -is an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. Three kinds of irony Conflict/Plot -is the struggle found in fiction. Conflict/Plot may be internal or external and is best seen in (1) Man in conflict with another Man: (2) Man in conflict in Nature; (3) Man in conflict with self.

6 Literary Terms Continued Hyperbole -is exaggeration or overstatement. Metaphor -the comparison of two UNLIKE things Image- is language that evokes one or all of the five senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching.

7 Literary Terms Continued Foreshadowing-is the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature Personification- is giving human qualities to animals or objects.
