Welcome to MR-105 Seminar 2 Raquel S. Cummings Instructor

Agenda  Greetings  Review Week 1 Information  Review of lessons 7-10  Seminar Topic: Time Management  Questions/Answers

Greetings :o) Hello Everyone! I am so glad you could make seminar this evening.

Quick review of seminar protocol  Before we begin, I want to review the protocols for seminar.  I am also going to ask that you keep your comments focused on the topic up for conversation. If you have questions relating to your personal situation, please email me. :o)

Seminar Protocol Cont’……  Please avoid all side conversations, unless you are helping to answer someone else’s question. If that is the case, use their first name so we know who you are speaking to.  This is so that everyone is getting all they can from the lesson for the day :o)

Seminar Protocol cont’……  All of us, including myself are prone to making typos, so there is no need apologize, or even make a correction for that matter. We can probably figure out what it was that you were trying to say.  Please do not excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. We should refrain from personal household chores during seminar (please no mentioning changing diapers).

Things to Remember  Since no one is physically present to monitor that you are using the correct fingers to press the keys, you will have to remain very conscientious about your technique. It is very difficult to break an incorrect habit once it is formed.  Remember to keep your eyes on the copy, and keep your fingers on the home keys.

 How many of you were able to type at the target 19 wpm on last week’s timed typing exercises?  How many of you completed the Enrichment Activities?  Were there any particular keys/lessons that you struggled with?

Don’t Try This At Home :o)  This is an interesting as we journey into the world Of Keyboarding :o).  Go to the below website and take a look.  Keyboarding Practical Joke Keyboarding Practical Joke  What did you think?

 In the front pages of your textbook there are Reference pages. Included on these pages are 50 of the “must-know language arts rules for business”.  I will supplement these rules with additional lessons in seminar. Just FYI..

Hyphen Use  Page R-17 lists two uses of the hyphen.  Rule 13 reminds us to use hyphens with compound numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine.  Rule 14: Hyphens are used between compound adjectives that come before a noun, unless the first word is an adverb ending in –ly.

Hyphen  There is a distinction between a hyphen and a dash.  In addition to the previous examples, a hyphen is used when you want to divide a word at the end of a line instead of allowing it to wrap down to the next line.

Hyphen  To create a dash, remember to use: Two successive hyphens with no spaces before OR after. Dashes are used to set off a short summary after a complete main clause.

Hyphens Cont’…..  We may also use a pair of dashes in place of a pair of commas to set off words, phrases, or clauses that interrupt a sentence with additional--but not essential--information:  In the great and ancient empires --Egypt, Babylon, --splendid though they were, freedom was unknown.

 What is a compound adjective? Is formed when two or more adjectives work together to modify the same noun. These terms should be hyphenated to avoid confusion or ambiguity. A combination of two or more words that serves as a single adjective to describe a noun.  Please provide examples of compound adjectives. Compound Adjectives

A Little Talk about Nouns…  A noun is a person, place, or thing. (not to be confused with a proper noun = official name)  In the following sentence which word is the noun? We visited Hickory to look at four bedroom homes.  Which word (s) are the adjective/s?

In the following sentence which word is the noun? The adjective(s)? We visited Hickory to look at four bedroom homes.  Noun: Homes (Hickory is a proper noun) Which word (s) describe the home (adjectives)?  Answer: four, and bedroom  The two adjectives, four and bedroom, are considered to be compound adjectives. Since these two words come before the noun and neither of them ends in –ly a hyphen is needed between the two.

Nouns, continued  The sentence would be correctly typed as We visited Hickory to look at four-bedroom homes.  However, if we changed the previous sentence to “The HOMES we visited in Hickory had four bedrooms.” we do not need to use a hyphen because the noun precedes the adjectives!

 Here’s another example where the placement of the noun makes the difference! Example : He has a fifteen-year-old aunt. vs. His aunt is fifteen years old.  Please provide me with another example of your own…. Nouns, continued

Lesson 7: Semicolons  Does anyone know when we would need to use the ; (semicolon) key?  You may refer to the Reference pages to locate the Language Arts Rule: Rule 11 and Rule 12 page R-16 states that a semicolon is used to separate two closely independent clauses that are not joined by a conjunction (and, but, or, nor). It is also used to separate three or more items in a series if any of the items already contain commas.

Here are some ; (semicolon) examples  Management favored the vote; stockholders did not. BUT: Management favored the vote, but stockholders did not.  Staff meetings were held on Thursday, May 7; Monday, June 7; and Friday, June 12. Be sure to insert the semicolon between (not within) the items in a series.

Time Management  Now let’s talk about time management.  Who has enough time?

Time Management Discussion  All of us have many responsibilities. Some of us are juggling various combinations of job, family, other classes, and trying to find some private time just for ourselves! Right? What is one strategy you use in order to be successful with your classes? Please answer and respond to at least two other students.

Time Management Discussion Cont’ Of the assignments that are due each week, how do you prioritize which assignments to begin completing first? Respond to at least two other students. ** Remember to adhere to the due dates that are listed in the syllabus.

Suggestions  Complete discussion postings early in the week (deadline is Saturday for initial posts)  Return to the discussion board two additional days in order to post a minimum of two responses.  Decide ahead of time as to whether you are likely to participate in the live seminar option. If not, you should begin drafting option #2 submission early in the week.

More Suggestions….  Lessons should be completed on a daily basis.  Schedule extra practice time if necessary.  Try not to wait until the last minute!

Time Management Discussion  Imagine you were having a conversation with a new student that was having issues with getting their work done. What would be your greatest piece of advice that you could give to help the student to stay on track with the assignment deadlines?

What is due this week:  Timed typing: 21 wpm goal, max 5 errors, 55 pts. Lesson 10, Exercise I, page 35. Practice in Part 1, Unit 2, Lessons 7-10 Assignment is due Tuesday.  Seminar, 10 pts.

Have a Great Week…………..  Once again, thank you for participating in tonight’s seminar. Have a great week. :o)
