Warm up activity Match the pictures to the correct terms that describe them:  ____Ecosystem  ____biome  ____biosphere  ____Population  ____Communities  ____Individual organism 1 2 3 4 5 6

Lesson 1: Intro to Ecosystem  Level of organizations in an ecosystem  Biotic vs abiotic factors  Food chain  Food web  Interdependence in ecosystem- case studies

This picture illustrates a/an: a.Population b. community c. habitat d. ecosystem? What is an ecosystem? A complex, self-regulating system in which Living things interact with each other and with non- living things

Abiotic vs. Biotic factors in this ecosystem? Abiotic (non-living) factors Biotic (living) factors -Sunlight -Water -Oxygen gas -pH -Soil -Dead wood -Deers, fish, frogs -Plants -microorganisms

Organize the terms you have seen from the most specific to the broadest:  Ecosystem  biome  biosphere  Population  community  Individual organism Ecosystem - Levels of organization Most specific Broadest

Organize the terms you have seen from the most specific to the broadest:  Ecosystem  biome  biosphere  Population  community  Individual organism Ecosystem - Levels of organization Most specific Broadest

Species (groups of individual organism) Individuals of the same species form a Population Populations of different species come together to form Communities Communities comes together to form Ecosystems Ecosystems comes together to form the Biomes Biomes come together to form the Biosphere Ecosystem Levels of organization

Types of ecosystems

Exploring how producers & consumers are connected by building a food web This is a food chain Food chain = The feeding relationship among organisms in an ecosystem means “eaten by”; showing how energy is passed on from each living thing in an ecosystem

Food chain and food web Watch “Food chain & web” videos and answer: 1. What is a food web? A food web is a diagram showing connecting food chains in a community 2. How is a food web different from a food chain? A food web is bigger than a food chain; there are many food chains in one food web -Circle the food web and a food chain in the picture

Food web Food chain

A carnivore that preys on secondary consumers is called a tertiary consumer. A fox feeding on a snake is a tertiary consumer. Carnivores occupy the third and fourth trophic levels. A carnivore that preys on primary consumers is called a secondary consumer. A snake that eats a mouse is a secondary consumer. Herbivores occupy the second trophic level. These plant-eating consumers, such as mice that eat seeds, are known as primary consumers. Producers, such as grass or algae, occupy the first trophic level. First trophic level producers second trophic level primary consumers third trophic level secondary consumers fourth trophic level tertiary consumers Trophic level: the feeding position of an organism in a food chain.

What are the effects if frog population is completely wiped out? NO MORE FROGS 1.Insect population will soar 2. Plant resource get depleted 3. Eventually wiping out other predators such as snake and owl Did you know: in Bangladesh, frogs were a supply for restaurants. As frog population declined, the numbers of mosquitoes rose, causing dramatic malaria among humans.

What is the top predator of the deep blue ocean? Is shark a producer or consumer of the marine ecosystem ?

Case study # 1: Decline in population of a top predator - SHARK SHARK is an ENDANGERED SPECIES

Marine Ecosystem Feed on Cownose Ray Oysters Ray Population= 0 Oyster Population =0

Feed on Cownose Ray Oysters Ray Population= 0 Oyster Population =0 90% of the world shark population has gone Sharkwater Doc: https://vimeo.com/88724551

Case study #2: Kelp forest Overhunted for their fur Sea urchin population rose Kelp forest declined Fish out of food Watch “ Kelp forest – PBS”

Energy pyramid: the 10% rule Consumers only receives 10% of the energy from its prey 90% of the energy is lost at each transfer. Eg. If plants captured 1000J energy from sunlight (Joule or J is the unit of energy), how much energy will other animals of this food chain receive? Plant ___J  Insect ___J  Mouse ___J  Owl___J 1000 100 101

Energy pyramid (cont.) shows the amount of available energy the producers and consumers contain as energy flows through the ecosystem. Producers are found at the base and always contain the most amount of energy. Most amount of energy

Assessment A B C D E 1.Which layer represents tertiary consumer? Layer D 2. The frogs are in what trophic level? 3 rd trophic level 3. Frogs are called _________consumers 4. Energy in the rest of the trophic level if producers contain 10 000 J? Producers: 10 000 Joules Secondary 1000 J 100 J 10 J 1 J

Exit card #1 Name: __________________Ecosystem organization Assessment Testing for vocabulary retention Match the example to the correct word. Write the letter of the correct word in the blank beside the example. ____Rosie the rattlesnakea) ecosystem ____rattlesnakes, mice, small birds, crickets, grass, b) community hawks, cacti, and tumbleweedc) biome ____the entire planet Earthd) individual ____the community, the water, the air, the rockse) population the soil, and the mountainsf) biosphere ____a desert ____all the rattlesnakes in the area

Exit card #2 List 5 biotic AND 5 abiotic factors by observing a fish tank.
