Mobile Devices in Education Ms. Alisha Cornick

What are Mobile Devices??? 0 Mobile devices are portable electronics that can be used in various different settings. 0 Examples of mobile devices include: 0 Smartphones (iPhone, Android) 0 Electronic books or E-books (Kindle, Nook) 0 Mp3 Players (iPod) 0 Tablets (Nexus, iPad) 0 Laptops/Netbooks

Why should mobile devices be integrated into the classroom? 0 “The portability of mobile devices, as well as the programmability their hardware, software, and operating systems provide, allows for a learning experience that can be customized to both student and faculty needs.” 0 The Impact of Mobile Technologies on Distance Education, Shauna’h Fuegen. 0 Research has been conducted to support why many educators affirm that technology integration is beneficial to the student as well as the teacher.

Top Ten Reasons to Use Technology in School 0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YSA7e4_Xis

How does the Common Core play a role in this integration? 0 Recently, nearly all the states in North America have adopted the new Common Core State Standards. 0 These new expectations are implemented to ensure students’ readiness for post-secondary education and future professions. 0 For Language Arts, the standards address the use of technology to produce and/or publish work as well as collaborate with others.

National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) 0 These standards evaluate the skills and knowledge educators need to have in order to teach, work, and learn in a digital rich, global environment. 0 The National Educational Technology Standards, not only evaluate the educator’s skills, it assesses the learners as well. Thus, making students accountable for their education.

How can these technologies be implemented? 0 The next few slides will show examples of how to enhance traditional lessons and activities into digitally engaging products.

Podcasts: a digital audio or video file that be record and downloaded using an mp3 player or the internet. 0 Students will write a narrative. 0 Students can create podcasts with an iPod or online site and record their narratives. Sound effects can be include They can share their audio recording their peers. Play me!

Digital Storytelling: the art of telling a story while using multimedia tools. 0 Write a research report about a natural disaster. 0 Create a digital story about a natural disaster using iMovie.

Glogster: a website that allows the users to create a virtual collage of information called “glogs.” Tools used are videos, still images, audio, text, animations, and graphics. 0 Read a poem about Langston Hughes and write a biography about his life. 0 Generate a “glog” about Langston Hughes. http://www.glogster.com/alisha86/langston -hughes/g-6lnlu348qqh4au2utsidda0 Sample Glog

Lessons + Standards 0 The samples listed addressed both the Common Core and the National Educational Technology Standards. 0 Meeting both these sets of standards is possible as long as you keep an open mind about how you present your new technology integrated lessons.

Accessibility 0 Web accessibility means everyone, especially people with disabilities, can access the websites or other devices being utilized. 0 There are tons of sites that can be used to see if a website is accessible to all. 0 http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/accessibility.php http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/accessibility.php 0 http://wave.webaim.org/ http://wave.webaim.org/ 0 Most mobile devices offer accessibility options in their settings.

Responsibility 0 It is imperative that students and teachers critically evaluate the websites they visit for information. 0 You should look for: 0 Authenticity 0 Bias 0 Credibility 0 Usability 0 Provide credit for all information that is not our own.

Internet Safety 0 AUPs (Acceptable Use Policies) 0 Make sure all students adhere to the AUPs that districts require both parents and students to sign in regards to use of the internet. 0 Cyberbullying 0 Address this with students and inform them of what expectable internet and technology-use behavior is. 0 Vigilant when using technology with students. 0 Roam around the class while they are using devices.
