Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Frameworks: What we know... Are there design considerations that effect learning when creating multi-channel communication? –Learning will take place if the channels complement each other –Learning will decrease if the information on the different channels is inconsistent is distracting

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Ways to use How can teachers use multimedia tools? –Instruction Presentations (slideshows) Videos –Tutorials, demonstrations, documentation Digital Stories –Communication Websites Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: More about Media Elements Where can I obtain the media elements for my designs? –Text Text is the written information that is created by the author Script the information and record for the tool Sans serif fonts are easier to read –Graphics Static: still pictures such as clipart or photos Moving: animations or video Must consider the file types necessary Size of graphics = size of file

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: More about Media Elements Where can I obtain audio and video for my designs? –Audio Narration: Script, record, add Sound effects: free in web collections Music: Portions are free: check copyright –Video Create your own Check creative commons Check copyright Consider size/download time

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Software Options What are software options for creating presentations? –Proprietary MS PowerPoint (Available in Beta Office Live)MS PowerPoint Apple Keynote (part of iWork)Apple Keynote –Open Source Open Office 3.1 Presentation tool is ImPressImPress –Web-based Google Presentation (Part of Google Docs)Google Presentation Zoho Show

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Creating a Slideshow What are the steps in creating slideshow? 1.Plan the slideshow: Determine the purpose, the content and the tool needed (Try an online tool). 2.Outline the content and gather the media. 3.Enter the content. The content is entered the quickest in outline format. 4.Choose the slide layout: Select the layout for each slide to showcase the information. 5.Insert the graphics. Enhance the slide topic 6.Choose a slide design template: Should enhance the content. 7.Add transitions: Choose a consistent transition. 8.Preview your show and share.

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Software Options What are software options for creating podcasts, movies and digital stories? –Video: Create/edit video files iMovie Windows MovieMaker (free with windows)Windows MovieMaker Photo Story (Windows only - free)Photo Story –Audio: Create/edit audio Audacity : sound editorAudacity –Players: required to play audio/video files iTunes QuickTime

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Creating a Podcast What are the steps in creating an audio podcast? 1.Plan the podcast: Determine the purpose, the format (audio or enhanced) and the tools needed. 2.Record and edit: In an audio podcast, the script must be written and recorded. The audio should be edited until there is smooth flow of information. This can be done with Audacity. 3.Create an MP3 file: the audio must be exported to an MP3 file to run on MP3 players. 4.Upload to the web. This can be put at a blog or a website or iTunes for sharing (with permission).

Section V: Using Multimedia Authoring Tools To Enhance Learning | Chapter 11: Multimedia Basics: Creating a Digital Story What are the steps in creating a digital story? 1.Get ready: decide on tools and access 2.Locate the media: collect the photos, audio and the content that will become the text 3.Select the media: make selections and ready them for the story. 4.Write the script: Content guides narration.
