By: Angel and Paljeet NANOTECHNOLOGY

 Nanotechnology is defined as the branch of technology that deals with dimensions and tolerances of less than 100 nanometers, especially the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules  A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick  Nanotechnology can create many new materials and devices with a high range of applications such as in medicine, electronics and biomaterials WHAT IS IT?

 First introduced in 1959 by Richard Feynman  He talked about a technology that could allow individuals to manipulate atoms/molecules. HOW IT DEVELOPED In 1981, Eric Drexler turned Richard Feynman’s visions into functions by creating the field of nanotechnology.

 Carbon atoms are able to form a buckyball structure due to its electron configuration. (soccer ball formations)  Carbon atoms can also form a cylindrical hollow tube called a nanotube..  Although Nanotubes are smaller than human hair they are extremely strong, and can be used in building materials to increase strength.  If nanotubes were embedded into our fabrics it would create a bullet proof and knife proof clothing.  They are also very strong conductors of electricity, heat and have a great surface area.  They are used in touch screen devices, bullet proof vests, solar panels etc NANOTUBES

 Bucky ball  Nanotube CONT’D

 possibility that nanomachines can work inside cells and tissues to cure and treat any disease in your body. (i.e nanobots can remove plaque from arterial wall to help treat heart disease) FUTURE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

 Scientists are working on creating a nanomachine that will be able to transform atoms into specific designer molecules that cannot be assembled in regular chemical reactions.  Also able to fix any errors and genetic defects in the DNA of cells and targeting RNA cells carried by cancerous cells. FUTURE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY CONT’D
