NANOTECHNOLOGY By: Beranavi, Neha, Christina, Ramandeep

WHAT IT IS… A nanometre is one billionth of a metre long— the scale of atomic and molecular interactions For perspective, a single hair from you head is about 100 000 nanometres in diameter In simple words, it is the ‘scientific study of extremely small things’

HOW IT BEGAN… Began with the development of carbon-based cage molecules Due to their electron configuration, carbon atoms can form 3D soccer ball shaped structures They can also bond in ways that form long, hallow nanotubes

STRENGTH… Nanotubes exhibit extraordinary strength They are added to materials to increase strength such as bullet/knife proof clothing Good conductors of electricity Added to fabric to resist stains

FUTURE USES Scientists are working to construct molecular assembler—nano-machines that can assemble atoms into designer molecules These machines may be able to synthesize molecules that are impossible to make Nano-machines could repair genetic defects by modifying DNA in cells or targeting RNA of cancerous cells

DISADVANTAGES Chances of targeting wrong cancer cells Nano-particles in the air contribute to air pollution The tiny particles are too small for the existing air and water filtration systems, meaning they cannot be removed Trigger inflammatory diseases of the lungs such asthma
