SCIENCE REVIEW: PROPERTIES OF AND CHANGES IN MATTER TEST IS FRIDAY FEBRUARY 5 TH

WHAT WERE THE BIG IDEAS OF THIS UNIT? EVALUATE THE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF PROCESSES USED TO MAKE EVERYDAY PRODUCTS. WHAT DID WE DO? WE LOOKED AT THE PROCESS OF CREATING PAPER AND HOW EACH STEP HAD A SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. WE LOOKED AT THE ATLANTIC GARBAGE DUMP – A GROSS EXAMPLE OF HOW OUR EVERYDAY PRODUCTS AND CONSUMPTION HAVE RUINED AN ECO-SYSTEM CONDUCT INVESTIGATIONS THAT EXPLORE THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND CHANGES IN MATTER. WHAT DID WE DO? WE HAD A WHOLE WEEK OF SCIENCE. YOU WORKED WITH PHYSICAL CHANGES AND CHEMICAL CHANGES. WE INVESTIGATED THE WATER CYCLE AND DINO DRINKING WATER DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER, CHANGES OF STATE, AND PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE. WHAT DID WE DO? WE WORKED ON COMPARING PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES. WE EXAMINED THE PROPERTIES AND FORMS OF MATTER.

YOUR TEST … THIS TEST WILL NOT BE ABOUT REGURGITATION OF INFORMATION. YOU WILL NOT BE ASKED DIRECT QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARNED … FOR EXAMPLE – QUESTIONS LIKE “WHAT IS A CHEMICAL CHANGE? GIVE 5 EXAMPLES” WON’T BE ASKED (WE ALREADY ASKED THOSE QUESTIONS!). YOU WILL NEED TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARNED AND APPLY IT – THIS IS THE POINT OF EDUCATION. ITS ONE THING TO BE TAUGHT FACTS. ITS ANOTHER TO LEARN HOW USE IDEAS.

TEST FORMAT YOUR TEST WILL CONSIST OF 3 VIDEOS AND 2 PICTURES. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO EXAMINE THEM AND APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED TO THEM IN SOME WAY.

SUCCESS CRITERIA FOR A EXPLAINING YOUR THINKING IN SCIENCE … YOU WILL EXPLAIN YOUR THINKING WHEN … 1.YOU TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE TASK REQUIRES. 2.YOU APPLY SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE TO YOUR ANSWER. 3.YOU APPLY IDEAS AND CONCEPTS YOU LEARNED TO YOUR ANSWER. 4.YOU USE MULTIPLE PIECES OF EVIDENCE TO BACK UP YOUR IDEAS

SAMPLE VIDEO QUESTION: “WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE MATTER IN THIS VIDEO?”

HOW DO WE ANSWER THIS QUESTION? LETS LOOK AT THE SUCCESS CRITERIA: YOU WILL EXPLAIN YOUR THINKING WHEN … 1.YOU TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE TASK REQUIRES. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO? 2.YOU APPLY SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE TO YOUR ANSWER. WHAT ARE SOME SCIENTIFIC WORDS THAT APPLY TO THIS TASK? 3.YOU APPLY IDEAS AND CONCEPTS YOU LEARNED TO YOUR ANSWER. WHAT IDEAS AND CONCEPT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT THAT APPLY HERE? 4.YOU USE MULTIPLE PIECES OF EVIDENCE TO BACK UP YOUR IDEAS HAVE YOU APPLIED ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE?

LETS DO THAT NOW. IN PARTNERS, EXAMINE THE VIDEO AND DISCUSS WHAT YOU SEE. YOU TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE TASK REQUIRES. What do you have to do? YOU APPLY SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE TO YOUR ANSWER. What are some scientific words that apply to this task? YOU APPLY IDEAS AND CONCEPTS YOU LEARNED TO YOUR ANSWER. What ideas and concept have you learned about that apply here? YOU USE MULTIPLE PIECES OF EVIDENCE TO BACK UP YOUR IDEAS Have you applied all your knowledge?

PUTTING YOUR IDEAS TOGETHER … What scientific words apply here? What concepts apply here?Evidence

Level 1/2Level 3Level 4 This is a physical change. I know because it gets bigger and there is a colour change. I also see some light and smoke. Those are signs of a physical change. This thing is a chemical change. I can tell because it changes shape and color a lot. There is some sort of chemical change to the matter in this video. I can tell because it is changing size, colour, shape, and I see some smoke and light as well. I know that these are all evidence that a chemical change is happening. The substance is pretty weird looking so I doubt it’s the same as the white powder. If its changed it has to be a chemical change. If it was a physical change there would be some melting or something, but there isn’t. This is definitely a chemical change and not a physical change. There are many signs of a chemical change. The matter in the video is changing into what looks to be a new substance and I doubt it will turn back. I see a colour change and light as well, and if I was there I bet I could smell something and notice some heat. Also, whoever is doing this is adding heat to the reaction and I know that heat is a chemical accelerant. This has got to be a chemical change.

REVIEW #2 WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS VIDEO?

Level 1Level 2Level 3Level 4 This is a non Newtonian fluid. They are walking on water that turns into a solid. The matter in the pool is a non Newtonian fluid. When pressure is added it turns from a liquid into a solid. This allows them to run and walk on it. It is not a chemical change. The matter in the pool is a non Newtonian fluid made from cornstarch and water. When pressure is added it turns from a liquid into a solid. This allows them to run and walk on it. The pressure causes a physical change to the matter. It is not a chemical change because it is only changing state. I don’t see any light, smoke, gas, or any of the other characteristics of a chemical change. Only physical change characteristics. The matter in the pool is a non Newtonian fluid made from cornstarch and water. When pressure is added it turns from a liquid into a solid. This allows them to run and walk on it. The pressure causes a physical change to the matter. The particles in the matter start off moving and flowing in a liquid. When pressure is added the particles move closer together and form a solid. It is not a chemical change because it is only changing state – there is no new substance. I bet if they run on it long enough it will dry out because the heat will cause the water to evaporate.

REVIEW #3 – WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS PICTURE? EXPLAIN WHY IT HAPPENS AND HOW SCIENCE COULD HELP. Remember your Checklist: 1.Are you using big ideas and concepts you have learned in science to explain your answer? 2.Are you using scientific vocabulary? 3.Are you using many pieces of evidence to back up your point.

REVIEW #3 – WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS PICTURE? WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT AND HOW DOES IT EFFECT US? Remember your Checklist: 1.Are you using big ideas and concepts you have learned in science to explain your answer? 2.Are you using scientific vocabulary? 3.Are you using many pieces of evidence to back up your point.
