1 Mixtures And Solutions

2 Mixtures Matter made of two or more substances. Easy to separate Physical properties do NOT change (maintain physical properties)

3 More example of mixtures are .....
. Artist Pallet .Salad .Birdseeds .Conglomerate Rock

4 Solution A mixture in which particles of matter are spread evenly. Hard to separate Physical properties DO change

5 Solution Solutions dissolve! They are spread evenly and you can no longer tell things apart. Forms a whole new substance

6 More examples of solution are ...
.Rubbing Alcohol .Saline Solution .Soda .Salt water

7 mixtures and solutions
So as you can see mixtures and solutions are everywhere!

8 Want to know how? SEPARATION
Can you separate the salt from the water once its been mixed? Want to know how?

9 Adding Heat You can separate solutions by adding heat!!
Once you add heat, the liquid (water) turns to water vapor and evaporates. But the salt crystals are left behind. You can separate solutions by adding heat!!

10 INVESTIGATION Materials: Salt, Sugar, Sand, Water, Filter Paper
Today you will investigate 3 different materials, sugar-sand-salt. You will add 3 spoonfuls of each to 100ml of water. Then you will stir each for 30 seconds. Finally, you pour the mixture through a coffee filter into an empty cup. What happened to the salt? Sugar? Sand?

11 YOUR TURN One way to separate salt from water is to boil the water. But we can also do it another way. Mix together salt and water, stirring so that the solution is good. Then add drops of food coloring. Use your solution to paint a picture on a large sheet of white paper. When it dries, you will have beautiful salt crystals all over your painting! Why? Because the water evaporates but the salt will remain!
