Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Objective: Students will classify matter by physical and chemical properties and identify changes in matter.

Matter is EVERYWHERE and is found in different forms as solids, liquids and gases.

When we examine a substance, we are interested in its properties. A property is something about a substance that can help to define it. Properties can be both physical and chemical.

Properties of matter are both PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Physical properties are thing about matter that can be observed without changing the substance into a different substance. There are many different physical properties that can be observed. H2OH2O

Examples of Physical Properties Color – Gold GOLD Au Density- 19.32 g/cm 3

Metal- STATE (solid, liquid or gas) GOLD PHYSICAL PROPERTIES :

Boiling point- 2807 ° F Melting point- 1947° F GOLD

Malleable- Bendable-forms into thin sheet GOLD Ductile- stretched into wire Conductivity- Conducts heat and electricity PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Soluble: to dissolve (without fizzing or bubbling!) PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Examples of Physical Changes Size change Shape change

Examples of Physical Changes State change Solid liquid gas

When a physical change occurs, the chemical composition of that substance DOES NOT CHANGE? THE MATTER basically STAYS THE SAME Au

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Chemical properties are characteristics of a substance that are observed when it REACTS or changes to produce different substances. Iron + Oxygen = Rust 4Fe + 3O 2 = 2Fe 2 O 3

Examples of Chemical Properties Reaction to…….. OXYGEN WATER CHEMICALS

REACTION TO…….. LIGHT

REACTION TO …… Heat Flammability

When matter undergoes a CHEMICAL CHANGE the atoms in the original substance are rearranged and produce new substances that are structurally different than the original matter. Iron + Oxygen = Rust 4Fe + 3O 2 = 2Fe 2 O 3

Signs that matter is undergoing a chemical change: FIZZING and BUBBLING Giving off HEAT/SMOKE

Color CHANGE

Smell Change

When matter undergoes a CHEMICAL CHANGE, the atoms in the original substance are rearranged and produce new substances that are structurally different than the original matter. COPPER

***MATTER FORMS A _________________ SUBSTANCE TOTALLY NEW

Review Physical or Chemical Properties of Matter WARM-UP Directions: *Number your paper from 1 to 10. *For each item, label it as a physical property (P) or a chemical property (C).

Physical or Chemical Property? 1. Flammability

Physical or Chemical Property? 2. Malleability

Physical or Chemical Property? 3. Melting and Boiling Point

Physical or Chemical Property? 4. Oxidation (Rusting)

Physical or Chemical Property? 5. Conductivity

Physical or Chemical Property? 6. Dissolving without temperature change. No bubbling or Fizzing…

Physical or Chemical Property? 7.Dissolving with a temperature change. Fizzing and bubbling….smell release.

Chemical or Physical Property? 8.Oxidation (Tarnishing) No Tarnish Tarnished

Physical or Chemical Property? 9. A totally new substance is formed.

Physical or Chemical Property? 10. The substance remains the SAME…..

Now….Check your answers!

Chemical Property 1. Flammability

Physical Property 2. Malleability

Physical Property 3. Melting and Boiling Point

Chemical Property 4. Oxidation (Rusting)

Physical Property 5. Conductivity

Physical Property 6. Dissolving without temperature change. No bubbling or Fizzing…

Chemical Property 7.Dissolving with a temperature change. Fizzing and bubbling….smell release.

8.Oxidation (Tarnishing) No Tarnish Tarnished Chemical Property

When a physical change occurs, the chemical composition of that substance DOES NOT CHANGE! THE MATTER STAYS THE SAME! H2OH2O

Chemical Property 9. A totally new substance is formed.

Physical Property 10. The substance remains the SAME…..
