You may hear the terms used interchangeably But… Reminiscing usually means an informal but important review of one’s life. Life review usually means a special review of one’s life, guided by a mental health professional. Reminiscing/Life review

4 Nursing Assistant Monthly APRIL 2007 Reminiscence & life review Reminiscing also Builds a stronger relationship with the listener (for example, caregiver) Helps prepare an older person for the end of his/her life Contributes to emotional health

5 Nursing Assistant Monthly APRIL 2007 Reminiscence & life review How a CNA can help Encourage the resident to tell stories of his/her life Ask open-ended questions like, “Where were you when…” or “Can you tell me about your experience in the Navy?” Be a good listener!

6 Nursing Assistant Monthly APRIL 2007 Reminiscence & life review Good listening tips Use body language that signals your interest Position yourself at eye level with resident Make frequent eye contact Show you are listening by nodding your head occasionally or giving verbal cues such as “uh-huh”, “I see…”, or “Really?”

7 Nursing Assistant Monthly APRIL 2007 Reminiscence & life review More on listening… Don’t judge the resident As a professional caregiver, stay focused on the resident’s needs, not your own. Avoid burdening the resident with your personal problems. Remember that the resident has the right to NOT share personal stories if that is her/his wish.

8 Nursing Assistant Monthly APRIL 2007 Reminiscence & life review REMEMBER… Reminiscing sometimes brings tears as well as smiles Be sure to report to the nurse or supervisor if a resident seems very sad or distressed Enjoy the residents’ stories- they hold valuable life lessons!
