3 Battle of Monmouth Courthouse – June 28, 1778
Americans Leaders: George Washington, Charles Lee, and Nathanael Green. Strength: 11,000 soldiers No foreign or local aid Took place in New Jersey. British Leaders: Sir Henry Clinton and Charles Cornwallis Strength: 14,000-15,000 soldiers Received help from the German forces. Aftermath Both sides declared a victory. There was no clear winner of this battle, but it did give encouragement to the Patriots that they could stand up to the British. The British suffered around 300 casualties while the Americans suffered around 350 casualties. Washington damaged their column badly even though he intended to destroy it.

4 Battle of Newport- August 29, 1778
Also known as the Battle of Rhode Island and the Battle of Quaker Hill Began at Howland’s Ferry Americans Leaders: John Sullivan, Nathanael Greene, Christopher Greene, and Comte D’Estaing Strength: 10,100 soldiers Foreign aid from France No local aid British Leaders: Sir Robert Pigot, Francis Smith, Richard Prescott, and Friedrich Wilhelm Von Lossberg Strength: 6,700 soldiers Their forces were partially made up of Loyalist regiments and Hessians. Aftermath British victory- Sullivan attacked the British with a defensive siege and called for reinforcements from Comte D’Estaing, but when his men never came he was forced to retreat and the British remained in Rhode Island. 30 Americans killed and 137 wounded 38 British killed and 210 wounded

5 Battle of Savannah– December 29, 1778
Americans Leader: General Robert Howe American Defenses Had 850 infantry and militia. Also had 4 artillery. The American troops were made up of local militia and some continental soldiers. No foreign aid British Leader: Colonel Archibald Campbell Had 3,100 infantry and militia.  It was the opening move in the British southern strategy to regain control of the rebellious southern provinces by appealing to the strong Loyalist settlement believed to be there. Aftermath The Americans were extremely out-numbered and they tried to fight, but the British surrounded them and they were forced to surrender. Campbell gained control of the city at the cost of seven of his soldiers. Campbell took 453 prisoners, and there were 83 dead and 11 wounded from Howe's forces.

6 Battle of Briar Creek- March 3, 1779
Americans Leaders: General John Ashe and Colonel Samuel Elbert Strength: 1,100 infantry and militia No local or foreign aid British Leader: Mark Provost and Colonel Archibald Campbell Strength: 900 infantry, cavalry grenadiers, and militia Aftermath British victory- Provost was marching up from Savannah to support Campbell and greatly defeated the American forces. The amount of Americans killed is not known because many retreated back to North Carolina. 150 American bodies were found and 227 people were captured. 5 British killed and 11 captured

7 Battle of Stony Point- July 15-16, 1779
Americans Leader: Anthony Wayne Strength: 1,500 soldiers Believed intelligence gathered from local merchants No foreign aid British Leader: Henry Johnson Strength: 750 soldiers Aftermath American Victory 15 Americans killed and 83 wounded 20 British killed and 74 wounded prisoners. There were 472 unwounded prisoners. The Battle of Stony Point took place in West Point, NY.
