A commitment to structured, purposeful inquiry

 Encourages international-mindedness  Encourages a positive attitude to learning by engaging students in inquiries and developing their awareness of the process of learning so that they become lifelong learners  Reflects real life by encouraging learning beyond the traditional subjects with meaningful, in-depth inquiries into real issues  Emphasizes, through the learner profile, the development of the whole student – physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically

In Kindergarten students study six PYP units of inquiry during the course of the year. All units are taught in a trans-disciplinary way, incorporating all disciplines and relevant skills and concepts.

For more details about what we will be doing in the classroom please check the KG newsletters. Trans-disciplinary Theme Central Idea WHO WE ARE Friendships enrich our lives and require nurturing in order to develop WHERE WE ARE IN TIME AND PLACE Documenting personal histories allow us to reflect on and celebrate who we are and where we come from HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES Stories inform and provoke us, and give us pleasure HOW THE WORLD WORKS Our world is made of different materials which determine how we use them HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES Transportation systems are directly related to the needs of a community SHARING THE PLANET Plants are important recourse for life

Knowledge Significant, relevant content with consideration to prior experience and understanding Concepts Powerful ideas with relevance to subject areas – exploration to develop coherent, in-depth understanding is encouraged Skills Capabilities to effectively participate in a changing world – disciplinary and transdisciplinary Attitudes Fundamental dispositions necessary to the values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people Action Deeper learning in responsible behaviour through responsible action –in practice of the other essential elements

We believe that language is fundamental to all learning, thinking and communicating. It transcends all the disciplines and is learnt in context at every StrandsOralWrittenVisualSubstrandsListeningSpeakingReadingWriting Viewing and presenting

Scribbling Letter-like Symbols Strings of Letters Beginning Sounds Consonants as Words Initial, Middle and Final Sounds Transitional Phase

We believe in a ‘child centered’ and ‘activity oriented’ philosophy towards mathematics. This encourages students to propose ideas, test their hypotheses, generalize their findings and search for alternate solutions. Strands Number Patterns and Function Data Handling Measurement Shapes and Space

 Assessment is the gathering and analysis of information about student performance. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning process.  Assessment is integral to all teaching and learning. It is central to the PYP’s goal of thoughtfully and effectively guiding children through the five essential elements of learning.

 Newsletters will be sent home explaining and informing you of student learning, class and school events.  Various opportunities will be given to become actively involved in your child’s learning. OSC aims to provide opportunities to create a valuable partnership between parents/carers and ourselves.  We welcome parents to share their knowledge, experiences, special skills and talents with the class, if these are linked to the Units of Inquiry covered in Kindergarten.  Each class will have two support parents. The role of the support parent is to assist the teacher with school and class events. The Primary Principal will be meeting with ALL primary support parents early in the year. Thereafter, the homeroom teachers will meet the class support parents.

Email, Communication Book, Face-to-Face We are keen to have regular contact and communication with you. We would appreciate if we are informed of any special events that occur in your child’s life which may impact their routine. (eg: parents leaving the country, grandparents/family friends visiting, accidents etc.) Please let your child know if you have written any message on it as it is their responsibility to show us the note.
