4 Colloid Suspensions Produce the Tyndall Effect: Suspension: Particles in a mixture are so large that they settle out (e.g., Italian S.D.) Solution:Particles are so small that they are uniformly dispersed in a single phase (e.g., air, soft drink) Colloids: Particles of intermediate size between suspension & solution; don’t settle out but interfere with light passing through

6 Solutes: Categories base on electrical conductivity (electricity is essentially the flow of electrons) Electrolytes: Conduct electricity when dissolved in water. ionic compounds (ions can carry charge) Nonelectrolytes: Do not conduct electricity when dissolved in water molecules
