1 More Mixtures

2 Solutions A mixture made of two or more types of particles that appears to be a single substance throughout. The particles are uniformly dispersed throughout. Particles are so small that they don’t scatter light so a beam of light through the solution can’t be seen. They are so small they don’t settle out. Solute is the substance dissolved in another or the minor component. Solvent is the substance in which the solute is dissolved or the major component. EX: salt water

3 Concentrations of Solutions Concentration is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent The solubility of a solute is the ability of the solute to dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature. Solutes can be made to dissolve faster through active mixing, heating, or through crushing the solute into smaller pieces. Saturation point is when no more solute can be dissolved in the solvent. Maximum concentration

4 Suspensions and Colloids Suspensions are mixtures that contain particles large enough to settle out or be filtered and to block or scatter light. EX: snow globe. EX: muddy water Colloids are mixtures that contain particles that are intermediate in size. They are too small to settle out or be filtered but are large enough to scatter light. EX: milk, Jello
