Mixtures

Mixtures  Most matter you find in your environment, like the milk we drink, the air we breathe, and the sidewalks on which we walk, occur as parts of mixtures.

Mixtures  A mixture is made from two or more substances or elements that are in the same place, but do not combine chemically to make a new material.  Each substance in the mixture keeps its individual characteristics/ properties.  Two types: –Heterogeneous and Homogeneous

Heterogeneous Mixtures  In some mixtures, the different parts are visible. –Salads or Chex Mix  The different parts can be easily separated by physical means. –For example, you can pick the tomatoes out of a salad.

Homogeneous Mixtures  In other mixtures, the individual parts are so evenly mixed, it is difficult to identify the different pieces. –milk and salt water  The parts of the mixture are more difficult to separate –you cannot pick the salt out of the water with your fingers –processes such as distillation or filtration may be required.  Homogeneous mixtures are also known as Solutions
