Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms Matter is classified as either an element, compound, or mixture
Elements: A pure substance that contains only one kind of atom Examples – gold, oxygen, and hydrogen
Compounds: Made of elements that are chemically combined Create a new substance Cannot be separated except by a chemical change Examples – water (hydrogen & oxygen), salt (sodium chloride)
Mixtures: The combination of 2 or more substances that can be separated The identities of the substances do not change
Types of Mixtures: Heterogeneous – a mixture in which the substances are not evenly mixed (examples – trail mix, salad, muddy water) Homogeneous – a mixture in which the substances are evenly mixed (examples – air, soda, brass )
Solutions: Homogenous mixtures in which one substance is dissolved into another substance Example – salt water Most solutions can be separated using Evaporation (evaporate the water and salt will be left behind)
Separating Heterogeneous Mixtures: Substances can be separated using their physical properties These properties include size, shape, color, solubility, etc.
