Grade 2 Big Idea 13: Forces and Changes in Motion Topic VII Division of Science

Benchmarks SC.2.P.13.1 Investigate the effect of applying various pushes and pulls on different objects. Cognitive Complexity: Level 3: Strategic Thinking & Complex Reasoning SC.2.P.13.4 Demonstrate that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion of the object. Cognitive Complexity: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts SC.2.N.1.1 Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations. Cognitive Complexity: Level 3: Strategic Thinking & Complex Reasoning

What is an object doing if it is in motion? Moving

What is motion?  Things are moving.  Things in motion change position.

What are Different Ways an Object can MoveWhat are Different Ways an Object can Move? fast slow around and around straight zig zag up and down slide

What can you do to make an object move? Give it a push or a pull

What are a push or a pull that makes something move called?a push or a pull Forces

Pushes and Pulls http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/pushes_pulls.shtml

Forces and Movement http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/6_7/forces_movement.shtml

Connecting Learning What happens when we push or pull an object? What happens when I push or pull an object strongly? What happens when I push or pull an object gently? What is a force? What are you wondering now about forces?about forces

Puffer Paths Key Question: How many puff does it take to move your sheep from the pasture to the sheep pen? (See game board.) Materials per student to make a cotton ball “sheep” : drinking straw, cotton ball, chenille stick (pipe cleaner) Materials per group: game board and tally sheet Game Objective: Count and record the number of puffs it takes to blow a cotton ball “sheep” along a path on the game board. Compare your group’s data to the data for the whole class.
