2 Nouns A noun is a word that refers to any one of the following items: persons, animals, plants, objects, times, places, and ideas. Examples: Persons: Bob, woman, student, niece, doctor, men Animals: dog, mouse, cow, cats, elephants Plants: grass, tree, bushes Objects: glove, car, building, sidewalk, desks Times: hour, 8 o’clock, Thanksgiving, Mondays, weekends Places: home, office, city, Puerto Rico, Hawaii Ideas: love, youth, dreams Lesson 9 10/26

3 Pronouns A pronoun is a word that can substitute for a noun. Examples: Shimshock hit a homerun. She waved to the crowd. The man went into the store. He bought a book. My parents live in Minnesota. They are coming to visit. The bull escaped. The farmer caught him. The plant seems dry. Julie should water it. Lesson 9 10/26

4 Verbs A verb is a word that expresses activity, change, feeling, or existence. Examples: The dog is running down the street. Mary wrote a letter. Kevin sewed a button on the shirt. The weather became cold. The sky darkened. John likes Mary. The house is green. Rick worries that he might not pass the test. Lesson 9 10/26

5 Modifiers A modifier gives further detail to nouns and verbs. Examples: The blue car ran into the red car. The tall woman was carrying an expensive umbrella. The farmer patiently waited for the cows. Margaret walked quickly inot the kitchen. Lesson 9 10/26

6 Conjunctions A conjunction joins together nouns or ideas. FANBOY (for, and, nor, but, or, yet) - most common Examples: Paul and Mary ate dinner. I like coffee, but Rick likes tea. You can walk or take the bus. Harry played while Sam sang. Although Ed had not arrived, we ate anyway. Lesson 9 10/26

7 Prepositions A preposition shows the relationship between an idea and a noun in the same sentence. Examples: Patty sat on the chair. Tim gave the apples to Tom. Genna is the owner of the diner. The mop is in the closet beside the broom. Lesson 10 10/27

8 Adjectives An adjective is a word or combination of words that modifies a noun. Examples: They live in a blue-green house. Rick is an adorable baby. I met a homeless person in Waikiki. The student was so sleepy that he forgot to do his homework. Lesson 10 10/27

9 Adverbs An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. The simplest way to recognize an adverb is through the common ending –ly, but it’s not foolproof. Examples: Mrs. Shimshock slowly entered the room. The homework assignment was extremely difficult. Unfortunately, you have a lot of homework tonight. I hope you never own a pet wombat. 10 Interjections An interjection is a word, phrase, or sound used as an exclamation and is capable of standing by itself. Examples: My goodness! Can any of you do your work on time? Congratulations! You finally turned in an assignment on time. Oh! I didn’t know that. Mmm, that smells amazing. Yes, I will help you. Lesson 10 10/27
