1 EXAM ESSAY STRUCTURE

2 THESIS STATEMENT: Your thesis statement is what your essay is going to do in general terms. In many ways it restates the question in your own words. EG: That resistant readings of characters in “48 Shades Of Brown” are formed through the examination of gender representations.

3 INTRODUCTION Opening Sentence introduces the topic
This sentence introduces the play and playwright. It should give an indication of the type of play and provide information. Thesis Statement – what the essay is about This section should state the focus of the essay – provide the details of the essay question. Essay Map – what the essay will do; how it will discuss the topic This section states how the essay will discuss the topic by explaining each step of the essay. This should also link to the first paragraph of the essay body.

4 BODY PEEL Paragraph 1: Paragraph Topic: Should link to previous paragraph – Introduce topic of paragraph Evaluation: Discuss your main points relating to the topic of this paragraph. This section should show your understanding of the paragraph topic. – Reader positioning ; characterisation ; etc. Evidence: Give examples from the text that support what you have said (either refer to a particular section or give a quote). – This section should consolidate the understanding shown in the ‘Evaluation’. Linking sentence: Sum up the paragraph by restating its relevance to the main topic and linking it to the next paragraph.

7 CONCLUSION DO NOT BRING UP ANY NEW INFORMATION IN THE CONCLUSION!!
Restate the main topic of the essay: Do NOT simply copy what you wrote in the introduction. Go over the main points of your essay: This section should present the main points you have discussed in your essay. Concluding Sentence: This sentence should be a definitive ending to your essay. - You could reflect on the content/outcome of your essay. - You could use a quote or a reference from the play to conclude your essay. DO NOT BRING UP ANY NEW INFORMATION IN THE CONCLUSION!!

8 TIPS Do not use personal pronouns in your writing. (I, you,
we, us, etc) Make sure your writing in concise. Don’t ramble. Keep your essay structure in mind. Your writing should flow logically. When you use specific examples and quotes from the text, reference them with the page number/s they are found on.
