1 Tuesday – February 24, 2015 Mr. Lombardi Do Now: copy the domain-specific vocabulary 1.Tojo Hideki: Japanese army officer who initiated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and who assumed dictatorial control of Japan during WWII. 2.Nanjing massacre: the Japanese committed a series of atrocities against innocent civilians, including mass execution. 3.island-hopping: the American strategy to capture certain key islands until American forces were in control of the pacific. 4.kamikaze: a Japanese aircraft loaded with explosives & making a deliberate suicidal crash on an enemy target. Aim: How did Japan and the U.S. get involved in WWII?

2 World War II: The War In Europe Appeasement did not stop Hitler, it only made him want more land. Germany dominated the war with the strategy of blitzkrieg. WWII turning point: D-Day/The Invasion of Normandy (June 6, 1944). The allied powers surround Berlin, Germany loses the war.

3 While Hitler was rising to power, Japan was: a small country (archipelago) needing to import natural resources. the 1 st Asian country to industrialize. planning to expand to an Empire: – 1931 – Japanese soldiers take over Manchuria, China – 1937 – Full scale war between China vs. Japan ***Nanjing Massacre***

4 Nanjing Massacre Thousands of victims are beheaded, burned, bayoneted, buried alive, or disemboweled. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians (men, women, elderly, and children) and disarmed soldiers are murdered.

5 – 1930s - U.S. viewed Japanese invasion of China as aggression. – U.S. placed an embargo on exports to Japan (oil, gasoline, scrap iron, and steel) Either Japan has to withdraw from China or deal with the U.S. Japan responds: Attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 “A day that will live in infamy” December 8, 1941, U.S. gets into the war… not because of Germany, but because of Japan. 3 days later, Germany declares war against the U.S. because of their alliance with Japan  the world at war Japan and the U.S. enter World War II
