2. HOW DO I LOG INTO A SCHOOL COMPUTER? Your username is your student ID number Your initial password is your birthdate in the format YYYYMMDD. Once you connect, you will be prompted to change your password. Remember to log out COMPLETELY when you finish your session. Students can only be connected to the network on one device. If you forget to log out, you will not be able to log in again. Problems? If you forget your password or find yourself locked out of the network, please see the Library Ladies. They are your email delegates and can reset passwords or log you out remotely.

3. WORKING IN A NETWORKED ENVIRONMENT The computers at school are not like your home computer. These computers save to a central server; that's why you can access your files from any computer in the building connected to that server. Since they are all connected, what happens on one computer can affect other computers. What you do on your work station impacts others. This is why we insist you follow the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Since our computers are networked, they are also likely slower than your computer at home. Please be patient... abusing computers won't make them process any faster!

4. PRIVACY Your privacy expectations at school should not be the same as at home. Please remember that in a school environment, you have no guarantee of absolute privacy when using school technology. Our technology is the property of the Calgary Board of Education; the CBE has the right to monitor how this technology is being used (and yes, this applies to teachers too). Bottom line: when you're at school, someone might be watching what you're doing. Violating Acceptable Use policies could result in the suspension of your technology access privileges. That's never good.

5. YOU TUBE AND STREAMING MUSIC When you are word processing, surfing the Net, researching or working in D2L, you use this much bandwidth: When you stream music or video – by YOUTUBE, for example – you use this much bandwidth: Think of the school network as being like a pipe. We can only put so much through the pipe before it plugs up!

6. YOU TUBE AND STREAMING MUSIC This slows down the network in the entire school. It is important to not waste our network resources. Please restrict your streaming to school purposes: You tube is fine if your teacher has instructed you to watch a clip, or if you are doing research. Please – NO RECREATIONAL VIEWING of You tube videos. Do not plug the pipe! If you must listen to music, DO NOT STREAM from the computers. Use your iPod or MP3 player.

7. YOUR STUDENT DRIVE When you save to My Documents, you are saving to a Student Drive on the server. Since the files are saved in a central location, you can access these files from any computer connected to the server. Your Student Drive is labelled H: and will be named as yourstudentnumber$. ALWAYS SAVE TO HERE. On a Mac, be careful! Your Student Drive is mounted in the top right hand corner of your screen. You MUST save here. Look for the $. If you do not see a $ at the end of your student number, it is not your Student Drive. It's always a good idea to have back-ups of your files. We suggest you back up your important files or assignments to GoogleDocs, to a USB stick, your D2L Locker, or some other portable device.

8. SAVING DOCUMENTS ALWAYS use SAVE AS when first saving a file, so you can control where you are saving to (and what you are calling the document). Pay careful attention to the location, so you can easily find your file again. Please remember that connecting to the LAWN (Learner Access Wireless Network) DOES NOT connect you to the server. TIP: create a file folder for each of your classes. Save your coursework in the appropriate folder.

9. STUDENT MAIL You have a Student Email account with the CBE. You can find the link on the FLHS Homepage, or at the Learning Commons site. Avoid using Other email accounts for school use; due to the AUP, there is no guarantee you will be able to access other email services. To move files between home and school, use your D2L locker.

10. PRINTING In an effort to reduce our environmental impact, there are print limits on student accounts. Students have a printing limit of 200 sheets. This means you need to think carefully before you print. You should only print school-related material. If you exceed your limit, you will be required to pay for additional pages at a cost of 10 cents per page. See the Library Ladies to pay for additional printing.

11. DO a Print Preview to make sure you are printing what you intend to print. DO check for blank pages at the end of your document. If you have blank pages, DELETE THEM. DO think about ways to limit the number of pages you are printing. For example, when printing PowerPoint slides, don't print one slide per page. DON'T print out webpages or large multi-page documents. Copy and paste the text or images you want into a Word document, and print the Word document. This will be a huge paper-saver. DO think carefully before you print. Print only what you need. The trees will thank you. NEED HELP WITH PRINTING? JUST ASK !

12. USING THE LAWN You are welcome to bring your own technology to use at school. LAWN is the Learner Access Wireless Network. You can connect to this network with your personal devices (smartphones, iPads, laptops, etc.). You will not be able to connect to the school server from the LAWN. Nor will you be able to print. This means you will not be able to access files you saved to the server (this is why it is good to back up to your D2L locker, or other location). Remember that the Wireless Network, like the school network, only allows you to be logged into one device at a time. If you can't connect, make sure your smartphone is not already connected.

13. FLHS HOMEPAGE Use the FLHS homepage and the Learning Commons blog site to access up-to-date school information and educational resources. Anywhere, anytime access = AWESOME! Cool!
