1 Information for Classes of 2017 and 2018 School Year: 2014-2015

2 Who is Ms. Rice? ●Fresh/Soph counselor ●Hometown: Philo, IL ●Illinois State University, Eastern Illinois University ●Hablo espa ῆ ol ●Next year-- Mrs. Mendez ●New--just like some of you!

3 What does a counselor do? ●Listens to students ●Changes schedules ●Resolves conflicts ●Answers questions ●Helps you plan ahead ●Talk to either one of us!

4 Confidentiality ●Our conversations stay between us. ●Three times I have to break that promise: o 1. If you are going to hurt yourself or someone else o 2. If someone is hurting you o 3. If I receive a subpoena from a court of law ●Why? ●I hope that you would do the same for a friend!

5 How do I see you? ●Room 206 down the hall from the main office- the purple office! ●Sign up on the whiteboard o Pass will come to you in class when I am available ●Before/ after school appointments can also be arranged ahead of time

6 Why should I come see you? ●Schedule changes o no more this semester ●Difficult classes ●Friend/family issues ●Stressed out ●Questions ●Also sign up for college/military visits!

7 To Do--For you! ●Come to school ●Be on time ●Plan ahead for absences ●Do your homework ●Follow the rules ●Ask questions

8 Credits--you need them ●4 years, 23 credits o Schedule without study hall-- 7 credits o Schedule with study hall-- 6 credits ●Graduation requirements o 4 credits of English o 3 credits of math (including Algebra I & Geometry) o 2 credits of science o 2 credits of social studies (including Gov’t & Consumer Economics) o 1 credit of a foreign language, fine arts, or vocational ed o Driver’s Ed(0.5), PE(0.5), Health(0.5) ●Colleges (including NCAA) will require more

9 Troubleshooting ●How do I raise my grade? o Talk to your teacher/ ask for help o Do your homework--points can add up o Show up to class! o Don’t dig a hole ●What do I do if a fail a class? o Make up the credit the following year if needed ●Eligibility-- student handbook o What if I fail a semester? o What if I have an F temporarily? o September 15- eligibility for fall begins

10 Get Involved! ●Girls’ Sports: Basketball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading, track, cross country, wrestling, swimming, majorettes, soccer, golf ●Boys’ Sports: Basketball, baseball, football, track, cross country, wrestling, swimming, soccer, cross country, golf ●Clubs and other extracurricular activities: Drama Club, FFA, Latin Club, Spanish Club, Science Club, National Honor Society, Quill & Scroll, P.A.S.S. Club, Scholastic Bowl, Student Body Association, Art Club, Band, Choir, Speech Team Pay attention to the announcements and signs around the school!
