Expectations and Mindset Teacher expectations can transform student performance. How teachers convey their expectations remains a critical variable. Praise is tricky! Effort, not personal traits/attributes is what matters.

Effortful Control When students are faced with tasks that are important for long term goals but the short-term goals aren’t motivating or desirable, successful students marshal willpower and regulate their even when there are distractions. Students who possess effortful control are happier and are better able to handle stress.

Strategies and Tactics Students are more likely to persevere when they can draw on specific strategies and tactics to deal with challenges and setbacks. They need actionable skills so they can act responsibly, take initiative and be productive. Skills like: defining tasks, planning, monitoring, changing course, dealing with obstacles

Mindset Instructional Strategies Teach students the difference between a fixed and growth mindset Use the vocabulary with students and refer to examples while in the learning process Give students challenges and allow them to feel the discomfort of new learning but also help they see how that, with effort, they can become more comfortable/successful Praise work/effort rather than innate ability Be specific about what you praise

What about our mindset? Carol Dweck: One of the ways great teachers stand out from others is that they tend to have a growth mindset. Great teachers believe in the growth of the intellect and talent and are fascinated with the process of learning.

Grit Characteristics Self-control Persistence Tenacity Resilience Hard work Delayed gratification Perseverance Open-mindedness Optimism Conscientiousness Social intelligence Courage

Grit Instructional Strategies 1.Establish the environment (learning is trial and error) 2.Set the expectations (identify levels of frustration) 3.Teach the vocabulary (e.g. perseverance, resilience) 4.Create the frustration (at an appropriate level) 5.Monitor the experience (chart it) 6.Reflect and learn (find ways for students to tell you how they have grown and tell them how you have been challenged and are growing too) From Thomas Hoerr’s book, “Fostering Grit”

Strategies to Incorporate Grit in Your Classroom: Create a poster with the heading, “I showed grit when I….” Select students who have succeeded at showing grit and reward this effort as appropriate. Post newspaper clippings/articles of people that demonstrated grit. Use the vocabulary in everyday activities. Talk about your own challenges to learn something in the past and currently. Talk about grit as it relates to texts students are reading. Ask students to define grit in their own words. Talk about famous people who exhibit grit. When given a new task or assignment, ask students if they might need to exhibit grit when doing it.

Strategies to Incorporate Grit in you School: Talk about grit at your open house in the fall. Have a parent “grit night.” Discuss the importance of grit in your parent letters and notes. Incorporate references to effort and grit in your student feedback (grading).

How do mindset and grit relate? Mindset is a way of thinking about yourself as a learner. Grit is the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals. If you have a growth mindset, you likely have a high level of grit. If you have a high level of grit, you are likely to have a growth mindset.

What does mindset and grit have to do with arts integration? Mindset and grit can be taught If mindset and grit are taught explicitly, achievement increases Mindset/G rit Arts integration gives students the opportunity to learn in new and different ways Arts integration increases academic achievement increases in the content area Arts Integration In combination, mindset, grit and arts integration lead to an increase in student achievement Arts Integration /Mindset/ Grit  Our Learning Through the Arts Project provides students with an arts integrated learning experience, encouraging development of a growth mindset and calling upon their capacity to demonstrate grit-like characteristics.  As a result of their learning, students will demonstrate an increase in their academic achievement in the subject area being integrated.

At the end of our last art class on Thursday we had the students look through their art portfolios and choose their favorite art piece. They shared their thinking with a partner and then they wrote to the prompt, "Why did I choose this art piece as my favorite?" I wanted to share just a few of their responses. I am so proud of their growth as artists (and many of them were developing some perseverance as well). This arts integration unit has been very successful. My thinking is that it will only get better next year as we attempt to delve into theme and compare/contrast. I'm glad you were able to be there with us for a couple of sessions so that you could see their hard work. Kristina Wenger, Freese Elementary 3 rd Grade Teacher
