One fails forward towards success.’Thomas Edison: Inventor of:-The light bulb,The Phonograph, the world’s first method of recording and playing back sound,Batteriesand over 1093 more inventions
What did Edison mean?As an inventor Edison believed that when things didn’t go right or didn’t work that was just as valuable a part of the invention process as when things went right. He believed that to find the thing that did the job the best, you had to first find the things that didn’t.What would the world look like today if every time Edison hadn’t succeeded he’d given up?
Edison’s view of mistakes, or failure are characteristic of a ‘Growth Mindset.’
People with a Growth Mindset believe that …. Talents can be developed and great abilities can be built over timeView mistakes as an opportunity to developAre resilient (they never give up)Believe that effort creates successThink about how they learn
People with a fixed Mindset Believe that talent alone creates successAre reluctant to take on challengesPrefer to stay in their comfort zone Are fearful of making mistakesThink it is important to 'look smart' in front of othersBelieve that talents and abilities are set in stone, you either have them or you don't.
Which type of Mindset do you have? I like challenge. Even if I have low confidence in my intelligence, I throw myself into difficult tasks and stick with them. I set myself goals and make sure I have strategies to reach them.I need easy successes to feel clever. Challenges are a threat to my self- esteem, so I won’t engage in them.
Which type of Mindset do you have? I don’t want to have my inadequacies and errors revealed. I will withdraw from valuable learning opportunities if I think this will happen.I like to learn something new. I will readily sacrifice opportunities to look clever in favour of opportunities to learn something new.
Which type of Mindset do you have? I feel clever when I am fully engaged with a new task, exerting effort to master something, stretching my skills and putting my knowledge to good use, for example, helping others to learn.Even if I’m doing well initially, I won’t be able to cope with a problem or obstacle. I readily disengage from tasks when obstacles occur.
Which type of Mindset do you have? I am only interested in feedback if it reflects my ability or when it tells me if I was right or wrong.Feedback is important to me as it gives me information that can stretch my knowledge.
Which type of Mindset do you have? Intelligence is something you are born with, you’re either smart or you’re not and there’s nothing you can do about it.I think intelligence is something I can increase with my own efforts. I am keen to work hard and learn as much as I can.
Pupils with a ‘Growth Mindset’ make the most progress Doctors Carol Dweck and Lisa Blackwell carried out two years of research with hundreds of year 7 pupils. At the start of the research pupils were surveyed to see what type of Mindset they had.Their Maths exam results were then tracked for two years. Results showed that pupils with a Growth Mindset improved their results over time. Those with a Fixed Mindset did not.The gap in their performance widened and widened over time.
‘I think intelligence is something you have to work for…it isn’t just given to you…. Most kids, if they’re not sure of an answer, will not raise their hand to answer the question. But what I will usually do is raise my hand, because if I’m wrong then my mistake will be corrected. Or I will raise my hand and say ‘I don’t get this, can you help me?’ Just by doing that I’m increasing my intelligence.’
You can become a better learner by building your learning power
Changing your MindsetIf you have a fixed ‘Minsdet’ now, don’t worry, you can change your ‘Mindset.’

If you hear yourself asking What grade did I get?
What can I do to improve… Ask insteadWhat can I do to improve…
Success Stories – Who is this????? Target Grade D Year 10 Attitude To Learning 3 (Inconsistent) End of year 10 exam result U Projected grade E Year 11 Attitude to Learning 1 (Excellent) November Exam C Projected Grade B
On your post card write down one thing that you are you going to do to become a better learner?
