1 Welcome to the Breakout Session for Fine Arts: Enthusiasm, Mindset, and Self Directed Learning in the Arts Alex Graham –Canyon High School ( Film, Multimedia, Graphics) Lauren Tipping- Orange High School (Ceramics, Photography I and II, Art of Digital Photography )

2 Fixed Mindset “Creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. If you have only a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character” (pg. 6). Example: John McEnroe

3 Growth Mindset “The belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Everyone can change and grow through application and experience” (pg.7). Artist Example: Cindy Sherman, who is one of the most influential artist/photographers of the 20 th century, failed her first photography course.

9 Mindset Strategies Recognize that your students have a choice. How you interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is your choice. You can interpret them in a fixed mindset as signs that your fixed talents or abilities are lacking.
