Unit 2Cell Structure Microscopy Understanding what cells are Cell Types Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes Plant vs. Animal Cells Cell Organelles – “organs of the cell” Structure determines function

Microscopy – using microscopes to view objects and areas of objects that cannot be seen with the eye alone

Why Microscopy?? Need to know how to use the tool that can help us better see and understand cell structure If we can’t see cell structures, how can we understand them?

Plant cells under varying magnification

Animal cells under varying magnification

Preparing a specimen on a slide mount Specimen = the object you are observing Ex: red blood cells, human cheek cells

Steps to Viewing Success 1.) ALWAYS begin with the coarse adjustment lowered and the SCANNING OBJECTIVE 2.) Raise the coarse adjustment until you see your specimen, and then center it in your field of view. 3.) Switch to LOW Objective, adjust the FINE adjustment until your specimen is focused. 4.) Switch to HIGH objective, adjust the coarse and then fine adjustment until the specimen is focused. **BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK THE LENS OR THE SLIDE ON HIGH OBJECTIVE**

Intro to Microscopy Daily Assessment 1.) List three things you learned today 2.) Which is the most important, and why
