1 DEFENSIVE DRIVING TRAINING
WELCOME TO HiTech DEFENSIVE DRIVING TRAINING

2 DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE:
AIM OF THE DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE: To minimize death, injury and damage resulting from Road Traffic Incidents

3 Risk Factors for Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) in the UAE
The UAE has one of the highest RTA rates in the world. RTA’s are the second major cause of premature death in the UAE-second only to heart disease. Over 50% of the fatalities from RTA were due to excessive speed. Victims of RTA : 80% were below 40 years old; including the 13% who were children. 32.5% of the causalities in 2004 were UAE nationals.

4 Risk Factors Cont:- Disregard of road warning signs and signals.
Changing lanes without due care Dangerous overtaking Driving too close to the vehicle in front Fatigue / Tiredness Distractions whilst driving (mobile phones!) Poor maintenance of vehicles.

5 Road Accident in UAE Last five year ave.584 peoples have lost their live. 50% of death occurred due to over speeding. If we see the 2002 data 84% were male / 16% were female in which 80% were below 40 / 13% children. As per the Abu Dhabi Police record new data shows the highest accident rate in the world.

6 DEFENSIVE DRIVING Defensive Driving is actually an attitude and a set of skills a driver adopts to better deal with fast changing traffic situations in the safest manner. Defensive driving is the key to safe driving

9 Road Safety Threats: The driver
Driver poor behaviour (reckless, fast manoeuvers) Driver lack of competence (skill/knowledge) Driver fatigue/tiredness Driver mental stress Driver physical fitness Driver poor vision Driver disoriented (brain cramp) Driver alcohol/drugs/medicine

10 DEFENSIVE DRIVING How a Defensive Driver Should be : Always wear your seat belt. Obey all traffic regulations and signs. Maintain your vehicle in good condition. Keep both hands on steering wheel. Plan your route in advance. Adjust your speed for the traffic, road and weather conditions. Learn how to safely enter and merge on limited access highways. Signal your intentions in advance. Make courtesy a habit.( Give way to other road users).

11 How to adopt a defensive driving attitude?
1. See danger before it happens: Develop that 6th sense - the ability to see potential danger on the road before it happens. Always be alert to the traffic ahead of you, behind you and beside you. Never assume that all is clear and safe. 2. Know how to react to dangerous situations: Each dangerous situation requires a specific defensive driving response. i.e. Braking safely on wet or slippery roads. 3. Take Corrective action in time: Never assume that another driver will do the right thing to prevent an accident. Always assume the worst and take corrective action, before it is too late.

12 Typical examples of Driving Contrary to the Highway code
DEFENSIVE DRIVING Typical examples of Driving Contrary to the Highway code Exceeding speed limit. Jumping red lights. Entering a ‘T’ Junction without stopping . Over taking on the right. Driving too close to the car in front. Driving without lights. Turning without indicator. Cutting up - Swerving in front of a vehicle and then stopping or turning. Driving with defective tyres / brakes.

13 DEFENSIVE DRIVING Inspection Of Vehicle necessary when travelling more than 150km Check the vehicle coolant system. Check your tyres. Check the engine oil. Check the battery. Check the body of the vehicle.

14 DEFENSIVE DRIVING Traffic Signs

15 Vehicle Usage Regulations
DEFENSIVE DRIVING Vehicle Usage Regulations The driver should have valid UAE driving licence and company authorisation to drive the vehicle. Carrying of unauthorised passengers are forbidden (each passenger must have a seat belt) . Drivers must obey all traffic signs and speed limit. No driving in poor visibility. Adhere to designated parking areas. Vehicles over 7.5 tons should chock their wheels before leaving the vehicle unattended. Check surroundings to ensure it is clear before you start REVERSING. Vehicle engine should not be left running unattended or running in any enclosed space. Vehicle should be at a complete standstill before passengers disembark. Vehicle engine should be switched off when refuelling. Use safety belt - Passengers / Drivers. Any driver experiencing tiredness or fatigue whilst driving should stop for minimum 15mints. Taking rest under the vehicle for the purpose of shade is not permitted. Obtain the permit before entering into the process area. Never ever park or block the fire hydrant. Doing so will cost the driver 10,000 Dhs. And 3 months jail.

16 Driving in Fog / High Sand Desert Conditions
DEFENSIVE DRIVING Driving in Fog / High Sand Desert Conditions Ensure the vehicle’s windscreens are clean .(Mist & dust on the outside will prevent clear vision) In fog, condensation accumulates - Clean windscreen internally and put your ‘DEMIST’ heater ON. Dipped head lights must be used, Parking lights only are not enough. Use your wipers to remove the fog from the vehicle’s windscreen. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead . Fog visibility boards indicate a safe distance, if you cannot see it, then don’t enter the main road. Use of hazard flash lights in fog is only when parked-while driving use fog lights & low beam only. Apply brakes early and gradually avoid swerving due to excessive braking. Use the horn (If required). If you are forced to stop the vehicle, pull off the road and put your hazard warning lights ON.

17 Practice the good driving habits
IN EMERGENCY,YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO THINK. YOUR BODY IS PLUNGED INTO “FIGHT OR FLIGHT” AND YOU REACT IN LINE WITH YOUR WELL PRACTICED HABITS. Do yourself a favour ... Practice the good driving habits
