Macromolecule Notes

FIRST, RECALL… What is a monomer?  Mono= one  -mer = part  Building block What is a polymer?  Poly=many  -mer=part  A polymer is a large molecule consisting of many smaller subunits bonded together.

CARBOHYDRATES Monomer: Monosaccharides (simple sugars) known as glucose Polymer: Polysaccharides Function: Provide energy for respiration & structural support in plant cell walls Examples: Glucose, fructose, cellulose & starch Found In: Pasta, fruit, veggies Elements: CHO

LIPIDS Composed of: Fatty Acids & Glycerol Function: Provides insulation, solubility for some vitamins/minerals, waterproofing, part of biological membranes Examples: Triglycerides, oils, waxes Found In: Butter, cheese, meats Elements: CHO

PROTEINS Monomer: amino acids Polymer: polypeptides Function: almost all functions of body; muscles, skin, hair; structural support; transport substances; speed up reactions; control cell growth; communicate between cells Examples: Enzymes, hormones, muscle Found In: Meat, legumes, nuts Elements: CHON

NUCLEIC ACID Monomer: nucleotides Polymer: nucleic acids Function: genetic information and all information to produce all cell parts and materials Examples: DNA & RNA Found In: Every cell Elements: CHOPN
