Libra Full Moon

Why are we here? The time of the full moon is a time of celebration. We celebrate the energy of the SUN. The reason is that when the Moon is full it is the furthest from the Sun, thus the Sun’s energy is the strongest. Thus we celebrate the energy of the Sun through meditation and reflection.

All is Energy! For those of you who are not familiar with esoteric philosophy – or do not know it well – I will remind you that all is energy. Thus you should simply relax and try to feel the energy rather then concern yourself with understanding everything. During the lecture you can ask questions or make comments. After the meditation you may also ask questions.

The Sign of Libra

Which sign is the Sun in? The Sun is in Libra. And which sign is the Moon in? The Moon is in Aries.

Why should you learn about Libra if you are not one? You may have another planet - or the Moon – in Libra. Even if you do not the Libra energy will still affect you - and, perhaps, as importantly those around you. If you are a Libra you may not display all of the characteristics of Libra as you have other planets and energies which also affect you.

What mode is Libra associated with?

Cardinal The word “cardinal” comes from the French “cardo” meaning a hinge, that on which something turns. It is the most important part. The cardinal directions are the north, south, east and west. They are the times when the seasons change. Aries for Spring; Cancer for Summer; Libra for Autumn; and Capricorn for Winter. They therefore are times for a new beginning. In Astrology, the cardinal signs are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn). These signs are characterized by enterprise, or starting things. Sometimes Aries and Libra are called equinox signs, and Cancer and Capricorn are called solstice signs. Equinoxes are times of perfect balance between day and night (day and night are 12 hours long). The solstice times are the times of the longest day (Cancer) and the longest night (Capricorn). Aries and Libra are times of balance, but also times of abrupt change. Cancer and Capricorn are times of extremes.

What do we know about the Cardinal mode? Associated with starting things, initiating things or being “enterprising”. Librans do it in a balanced way …

What element is Libra associated with?

Air

What else do we know about Air? Thought, ideas and intellect

So what happens when we put the mode of cardinal together with the element of air?

We get Libra! As the seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra represents the seventh stage in the evolution of man and his place in the universe. The first six signs represent man’s attention turned inward to understand and develop his individuality and position in the cosmos. The rest of the signs represent his attention turned outward to humanity as a whole.

Libra! The Libra need is … The Libra need is … to do. In spite of their need to be liked, and reluctance to face confrontations, they are surprisingly strong-willed. They set out to accomplish their goals and will find ways to succeed one way or another, usually by using their wit and charm. The “iron fist in a velvet glove” approach is one key to their success. 18 Librans react to everything they experience in life with an intellectual orientation. Before they take physical action, before they assess the practical worth of something, and before they sort out their true emotions, they try to visualize it objectively as a kind of mental exercise. Their passion is not apt to be sustained however, if their interest in someone does not include intellectual rapport as well as physical attraction. It would be a mistake to believe they lack passion. They can be outrageous flirts and true romantics.

Libra’s Astrological Symbol Libra is represented by a pair of scales - the only sign to be represented by an inanimate object. All of the others are either humans or animals. This says something about the Libra objective - to be fair and balanced in everything in a detached way - it is an air sign and therefore seeks an ideal.

The Libra Myth Tiresias, the blind prophet

Tiresias, because he has the favour of the goddess Hera, is given the chance to observe a miracle: two serpents coupling in the goddess’ sacred grove. He asks the goddess which of them experiences the greater pleasure; and because she cannot answer, she grants him the boon of spending part of his life as a woman, so that he can experience both. At the end of this ritual of transsexual initiation, he returns to his male form and is called before Zeus and Hera and asked which experiences the greatest pleasure - male or female. At first he tries diplomacy, because whichever answer he gives he knows he is bound to offend somebody. But eventually he tells the truth - that the female experiences the greater pleasure - whereupon Zeus, furious at this insult to masculine vanity, strikes him blind.

Now, blindness in Greek myth is often a symbol for inner sight. All the great prophets and bards are generally represented as blind, either in one eye or both. Oedipus, when he makes his great discovery about his origins, strikes himself blind - that is, he sees inwardly at last. So, for Tiresias, the result of his experiences is that he now has inner sight, and becomes a prophet. Now, blindness in Greek myth is often a symbol for inner sight. 26 What has this got to do with Libra? Well, it’s the polarity. Male and female are as enigmatic a pair for Libra as good and evil, or perfect and imperfect. But it’s as though the need for balance means, among other things, that they're trying to balance the sexes as well, within themselves. That’s where Tiresias comes in - he tries out both. We should remember that this isn’t a sexual issue in the physical sense. It has to do with qualities of mind - for with Libra we’re always dealing with the mind.

The Tiresias myth is a profound one, and shows the profound side of Libra's journey. For Libra isn’t just about finding the perfect love, the perfect marriage, and perfect society. It’s about blending the opposites, bringing together people and things which would otherwise fight each other without understanding. With his great gift of diplomacy, Libra can straddle the fence and comprehend both sides, and act as an intermediary because he recognizes both within himself. Libra will always find deep conflicts in himself which represent the deep conflicts in life. And as he gradually carves for himself the thin road in the middle, he can truly become the bringer of the Good, the True and the Beautiful—because they no longer exist only in his mind.

We’ll now mention some of the challenges of Libra. Remember though we are talking about the energy of Libra and there are many types of energy.

The Labours of Hercules

The Labour in Libra His challenge in this sign is to capture a wild boar.

The Labour in Libra The Labour of Hercules in Libra is both a sad and a funny story. Before he begins he is told to take time to eat. In Libra we must learn to balance activity with rest, to feed our physical, emotional and mental bodies so that they will carry us through our tasks in life. Hercules is given a new bow and arrow to use in this Labour, but he refuses it, remembering the sad end of the Labour in the previous sign Virgo in which he wrongly killed the Queen of the Amazons. So in Libra he is unarmed and must rely upon his wit.

Hercules completes his task On his way up the mountain hunting the boar, Hercules meets two centaur friends. They invite him to drink wine with them, from a cask which actually belongs to the whole group of centaurs. (Librans are party animals!) While Hercules and his friends are drinking and enjoying themselves, the rest of the centaurs discover them and a fierce battle ensues. During the fight Hercules kills his two friends. He escapes to the mountains in dismay, and continues his quest for the boar. Finally Hercules sets a snare for it, and at dawn when the boar comes out to find food, it falls into the trap. Although unarmed, Hercules finds an ingenious way to subdue the boar: He picks it up by its hind legs and ‘wheelbarrows’ it down the mountain, laughing as he goes!

Hercules Comments In Libra we swing between the opposites and make relationship between the two. Libra rules sex and money. Money is a medium of exchange. Sex is the at-one-ment of the two opposites male and female. Venus (the exoteric ruler of Libra) is the planet of relationship and also rules money and resources. Libra is about justice and the law. The scales of justice balance all sides of a case with wise determination before pronouncing judgment. Saturn represents Earthly law. On a planetary level this is a time when changes to the justice system could take place to align human or Earthly law with heavenly law. In our own lives we might take a close look at the laws we live by. Are we following the Spirit of the Law in our everyday lives? Libra is also the sign of Decision – despite the fact that Librans are often known for their indecisiveness! In your life are you at a ‘crossroads’ where you must decide your next step; the future direction of your path? The Grand Cross symbolises a ‘crossroads’. Use your best judgement of head and heart, and then take the leap!

Where’s the balance? Libra is the sign of balance, of finding the mid-point between extremes. The key phrase for Libra is “I choose the way which leads between the two great lines of force.” Carousing with the centaurs, Hercules goes to extremes: First he fully indulges his animal nature drinking the wine. Then he kills his friends in a complete ‘mortification’ or rejection of his animal instincts. Finally in this Labour Hercules discovers the ‘middle way’, using his knowledge and experience of the animal nature to trap the boar when it comes out for food, and then by manoeuvring the animal before him on its own legs to get it down the mountain. This quirky, inventive solution shows the power of Uranus in action. Uranus (esoteric ruler of Libra) is the spark of intuition or inspiration that grounds the creative new idea.

Hercules Comments Humanity itself is the ‘crossroads point’ between heaven and earth. It is always a juggling act keeping the two in balance. In a way we are that which keeps heaven and earth separate, and in a way we are that which keeps them together.

We can view this as the energy of air - logic, thoughtful, intellectual - (Libra) on the level of the personality and fire -enthusiasm and high spirits - (Aires) on the level of the emotions – looking at the elements. Both are cardinal signs which are concerned with starting things, initiating things – or being “enterprising”.

Jupiter conjunct Uranus offers individuals (both privately and as part of a generation) a society that is in one stage of rebellion or another; depending on the times, it may affect fashions, religion, politics, or education and philosophy. Their lives may be heavily influenced by war, the status quo turned upside down, and the introduction of a new order and logic in society.

Sun opposite Uranus indicates that by choice or by circumstances (or both) these individuals are likely to be out of the main stream of society in one way or another. They may suddenly shift gears for reasons apparent to no one but themselves. At times they take the opposite point of view just for the sake of being opposed. They need to go their own way and keep their own schedule. Being confined or pigeon holed is an unacceptable situation they resent. Moon conjunct Uranus indicates those with restless, nervous, or impatient dispositions. It is difficult for them to truly relax. Their emotions are changeable, which makes it hard to predict how they feel about situations from one time to another. They may develop unusual emotional attachments or relationships, and will not tolerate having their feelings dictated to them, even by those they love. They are apt to have ingenious, imaginative minds, though they may be too easily distracted.

Sun opposite Jupiter indicates individuals who either promise more than is possible, or are victims of others who do this to them; situations that lead to disappointment and failed relationships until they gain maturity and experience to help lessen the potential. If they cannot avoid the tendency to set unattainable goals, they end up accomplishing nothing. Overestimation, overindulgence and exaggeration are the inherent traps associated with this aspect. Moon conjunct Jupiter indicates those with enhanced, and in some cases, excessive emotions and desires. Sometimes a too high opinion of themselves can spoil their wonderful sense of humor and compassionate natures, but as a rule, these individuals are very generous with the capacity to enjoy the best things in life. They have respect for knowledge and many develop into serious scholars while others have a tendency to become pseudo intellectual.

Why are we here tonight? The time of the full moon there is a direct alignment between the energy of the sign the sun is in and the affairs of the sign the moon is in. Sun – Libra – The pause to weight, choose, decide Moon – Aries – benefits the next beginning In our meditation this evening, let us visualize a common goal for humanity. Groups of men and women of goodwill bonding together to support right-human values. Let us use our magical powers of manifestation, and see this happen. Leaders and ordinary people alike, afire with goodwill and humanitarian vision, acting in concert for the good of mankind as a whole.
