2 Cities The revival of trade at the end of the Dark Ages led to the growth of cities. Merchants resettled in old Roman cities, known as Bourgeoisies.

3 Women in Middle Ages Women supervised the households, cared for children, and managed finances. Helped their husbands with their trades. Women could take over a husbands craft

4 Industry and Guilds Guilds-businesses in Middle Ages Apprentice- Young person who would learn a craft. Worked for free. Journeymen-after 5-7 years of being an apprentice they would become a journeymen. A person who worked for other masters working for pay. Masterpiece- Quality finished piece by a Journeyman in their craft. Allowed them to become a Master.

6 Universities The Universities of today sprung from the middle ages. First university appeared in Italy. Soon after Paris formed their own University.

7 Oxford University that forms in Oxford England Students began studying grammar, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy Took 4-6 years to get a degree

8 Religion and Universities Theology-The study of religion and God. This was the most studied subject during the middle ages. Scholasticism- finding harmony between Christianity and Philosophy.

9 Saint Thomas Aquinas Aquinas taught that knowledge was gained through scripture, reason, and experience. Summa Theological- Saint Aquinas’s work that tried to reconcile with Aristotle.
