3 NSBE Mission NSBE’s mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.“ LTU NSBE 2015-16

4 Introductions Ivoire Morrell Pre-College Initiative Chair Major: Computer Science Concentration: Business Applications Goals: To uplift, instruct, and encourage the youth to dream bigger, think more positive, and live purpose driven. LTU NSBE 2015-16 Mashia Kellum President Major: Information Technology Minor: Business Goals: Share the resource that is NSBE with younger individuals to increase awareness of STEM Majors and allow them to know what they want to do before they go to college.

5 What is NSBE? The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), is a nonprofit organization that is owned and managed by its members Over 30,000 members around the world The organization is dedicated to the academic and professional success of African-American engineering students and professionals leadership training, professional development activities, mentoring opportunities, career placement services and more LTU NSBE 2015-16

6 NSBE Jr. Chapter at the Fieldzone NSBE Jr. is a Pre-College initiative program dedicated to stimulating the interest in STEM fields Goal: Encourage students in grades k-12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees We will initialize a 10 week mentorship program designed to increase awareness of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) through a series of engineering and life skills activities in conjunction with the Joshua project LTU NSBE 2015-16

7 What is the Joshua Project? Focuses Communication Skills Positive Attitude Constructive Relationships Job interviewing Skills Resume Writing & other areas that target personal and professional development Goal: Students will gain confidence in who they are, equip them with essential skills to land employment in STEM related fields, and encourage them to dream BIG!!!! LTU NSBE 2015-16

8 Program Objectives To help students develop a positive attitude towards academic excellence To stimulate enthusiasm about science, technology, engineering and mathematics To encourage students to pursue degrees in engineering and other technical fields To increase the number of African Americans attending and graduating from college To encourage and support parental commitment to their childs education To raise cultural awareness among students To raise the self image of the students and influence them to set high standards for themselves LTU NSBE 2015-16

9 Benefits of NSBE Jr. College Admissions Preparation Participate in technical competitions Receive college application Discounted Kaplan Test Prep services and materials Scholarships and Awards Discount Registrations for conferences and events including the Annual Convention/PCI Mini Leadership Development Opportunities to be mentored and/or tutored by College Students or Technical Professionals currently working in a STEM field Invaluable opportunity to make friends and have tons of fun!!!!! 10 Weekly Schedule Week 1: Audio Engineering (February 6 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Getting to Know You Game Activity One: Life is Full of Hard Knocks (If there is enough time) Snack Break (15 - 20 mins) Guest speaker: Audio Engineering (5 minutes) Activity Two: Make a beat with audio engineer End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

11 Weekly Schedule Week 2: Civil Engineering/Communications (February 13 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Activity 1: Never Underestimate the Power of PMA Activity 2: Marshmallow challenge Snack Break (15 - 20 mins) Activity 3: Build a Bridge End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

12 Weekly Schedule Week 3: Architectural Engineering/Rejection (February 20 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Activity 1: Earthquake-Proof Engineering for Skyscrapers Snack Break (15 - 20mins) Activity 3: What would you in this situation (add some improvisation) End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

13 Weekly Schedule Week 4: Biomedical Engineering/ Goals (February 27 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Guest Speaker: Biomedical engineering (10 minutes) Activity 1: Able Sports Snack Break (15 - 20 mins) Activity 2: Career Planning Exercise (handout) End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

14 Weekly Schedule Week 5: Field Trip (March 5 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) We will take children from the Fieldzone on a field trip to a local plant, job, or anything else related to engineering so that they can learn more about engineering. Field trip sheet will be passed out the week before to make sure it is OK for all kids to attend the trip. We will serve snack at the same time for the event. LTU NSBE 2015-16

15 Weekly Schedule Week 6: Automotive engineering/Resume Writing (March 12 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Guest speaker (Bianca Bryant): Building a resume (10 Minutes) Activity 1: Resume building (40 minutes) Guest speaker: (Automotive engineering) Snack Break (15 - 20mins) Activity 2: Building Machines with Legos (Worksheets) End session. LTU NSBE 2015-16

16 Weekly Schedule Week 7: Interview Prep/ Robo Engineering (March 19 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Guest speaker: Job interviews(10 minutes) Activity 1: Believe It or Not: Your Attitude and Enthusiasm Just Might Get You the Job (Handout) Snack Break (15 - 20mins) Guest speaker: Robotic engineering (10 minutes) Activity 2: Robotic engineering exercise End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

17 Weekly Schedule Week 8: Job Interview prep continued/Computer Science (April 2 nd, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Fieldzone) Guest Speaker: Dress for success, branding yourself (15 minutes) Activity 1: Work on resumes (30 minutes) Snack Break (15 - 20mins) Activity 2: Build a website End session LTU NSBE 2015-16

18 Weekly Schedule Week 9: Career Fair (April 9 th, 2016, 11am – 1:15pm, Lawrence Tech University) Students will participate in a career fair where they will be able to talk to local companies, teachers from LTU, and business professionals. This will give the students a firsthand experience at displaying what they have learned from the previous program sessions and allow them to network with business professionals. Lunch will be served at LTU. LTU NSBE 2015-16

19 Weekly Schedule Week 10: Commencement of program (April 16 th, 2016, 11am – 12:30pm, Fieldzone) A commencement session will be held to honor the students for all of their hard work and dedication over the 10 week program. We will award each student a plaque honoring them as NSBE Jr members and as graduates of the Joshua Project. LTU NSBE 2015-16
