3 The USSR In October 1917 Lenin was named the head of the new Bolshevik government in Russia. Russia was renamed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Lenin and the Bolsheviks now had the challenging of building a new government in the face of considerable opposition.

4 Russian Civil War The Bolsheviks faced considerable opposition from a variety of groups who opposed their potential rule. This erupted into a full-scale civil war. Russian Civil War –1918-1921 –Fighting between the Red Army and the White Army Red Army: Pro-Bolshevik forces White Army: Anti-Bolshevik forces made up of a variety of political and social groups

5 The Bolsheviks Try to Secure Victory in the Civil War In an effort to secure victory in the Civil War, the Bolsheviks undertake two programs: –War Communism –Red Terror These programs were designed to “secure victory” in the Civil War. –Pragmatic Grounds –Ideological Grounds

6 Task Working with your group, you will look at a set of documents that describe War Communism and the Red Terror. Using these readings: –Define/Describe each of these programs –Explain their effects –Answer: To what degree were they designed to secure victory on… Pragmatic Grounds Ideology Grounds

7 Discussion Big Questions: –Define/Describe each of these programs –Explain their effects –Answer: To what degree were they designed to secure victory on… Pragmatic Grounds Ideology Grounds (How was the Civil War and attempt to Bolshevize the population?) Who were the Red Army’s real opponents in the Civil War? To what extent do these programs complete the link between Marxism and dictatorship laid out in Leninism?

8 The Civil War Ends In 1921, the Red Army finally defeated the White Army and set out to establish its new regime. What legacies did the civil war leave for the Soviet state?
