3 African Americans in the South Still majority of slaves in the South – condition of their lives depended upon their master Some African Americans were free in the South Freed African Americans lived mostly in the city, better job opportunities than in the North Did not have equal rights

4 The Second Great Awakening The Second Great Awakening was a revival of religion and morals This led to the Abolitionist movement Most members of the abolitionist movement were white, middle class, educated, religious people from New England (only a hand full of society)

5 William Lloyd Garrison Wrote an anti-slavery newspaper called The Liberator Founded the American Anti-Slavery Society to organize the abolitionist movement in the US

6 Harriet Beecher Stowe Wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin ◦ Novel about the horrors that slaves faced ◦ Convinced many people that slavery was wrong The book was banned in the South

7 John Brown Radical Abolitionist ◦ Believed needed to take armed action to end slavery Tried to have a slave revolt in Harpers Ferry, VA ◦ He led slaves to arsenal to steal weapons to attack slave owners ◦ Failed and he was hung for his actions

8 Grimke Sisters Came from a slave-holding family and wanted to see slavery come to an end Organized speeches to convince people to stop slavery
