What you need to know about the media market place DMC U1 1.2, 1.3

Media company: BBC  Who they are what they do : The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcasting statutory corporation. Its main responsibility is to provide impartial public service broadcasting in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.  What products they make: The BBC creates many interactive media products including: TV programmes, Radio stations, News, music, website and other advertising. One example of what the BBC has created would be the BBC news – This is a TV Program aired across the BBC TV channels giving information about what's going on locally and worldwide to everyone within the UK.  Target audience : The BBC has a wide range of different audiences. This due to the BBC having a wide range of products they offer for example, the BBC relates to children by having CBBC and CBBIBES (TV channels catered for kids) and then BBC3 where they normally show comedy and adult programmes (more catered towards the teenager or the young adult) and then having BBC News, normally on BBC1 appealing to an older audience.  What market sector they’re involved in: Predominately, the BBC are in the public sector as all their products are for the general public. The BBC started out as just a TV channel in 1992, they were the first broadcasting organisation. However, throughout the years the BBC have evolved and branched out to Radio, Interactive, Music and other commercial activities.

My company: Embrace  Who they are what they do : Embrace are a sector-focused communications agency based in London and in the North West. Their main duties include designing, client services and Social media/online PR.  What products they make : Embrace make a range of products including Logos, print ads, websites, PR, social media presence and ad campaigns.  Target audience : Companies looking to rebrand themselves, companies who need a website built for them. In terms of social media and PR – target audience goes out to the clients fans (e.g. Gary Barlow or The Saturdays fan base).  What market sector they’re involved in : Embrace are mainly focused catering for the Financial services, Healthcare and Public Sector markets.

Media company: Virgin Media  Who they are what they do: Virgin Media Inc. is a company which provides fixed and mobile telephone, television and broadband internet services to businesses and consumers in the United Kingdom. The company was formed in March 2006 by the merger of NTL and Telewest, which created NTL:Telewest. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Mediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Media  What products they make: Virgin Media make a range of products for many multimedia platforms e.g. they have a phone service provider, a broadband service for internet access and they also offer a TV service for all their customers.  Target audience: I would say Virgin Media’s target audience would be for a more mature audience as most of their products are aimed at an older audience. For example by having a TV service, it shows they are trying to aim towards to an older audience as normally having a TV or having to pay for your TV services means you are of the older generation. I would say Virgin Media cater from the ages of 16+.  What market sector they’re involved in: Virgin Media are in the Communication sector as all their products cater towards to either people wanting to communicate with each other (internet and phones) plus also catering for companies that want to communicate with their target audience (advertising on Virgins TV services).

How I can apply my skills to a role  Company: Embrace  Job Role: Social Media Executive – Managing and analysing all key areas of the companies and clients Social Media needs.  How many skills apply to this job role: One key skill I could bring to the job role that would help me out is my already basic knowledge of all things Social Media. I am an avid user of Facebook and Twitter so I already know my way around the important social media websites – I wouldn’t need to be trained on how to use or navigate my way around them. Another key skill I could bring that would make me suitable to having this role would be my experience with dealing with the public. Social Media is a very public based platform as everything you post on Social Media can be seen by anyone. I believe working at a theme park will of helped me already gained the skills of interacting and dealing with the public as I had to deal with this kind of thing everyday during my time there. I learnt how to adapt my tone to deal with different types of people and I think this is important as during this role you would have to speak to many different target audiences. One more thing I that would make me suitable for the role would be the fact that again working in a theme park has led me to gain good skills in teamwork and also organisational skills. During my stay there I had to keep track or schedules and also work within small team so that everything was done sufficiently. This is definitely something I could bring to the job role as if I’m working with multiple clients I will need to keep track of what I’m doing and when plus also working with different colleges to get the job done.
